25 Cherry trees be planted to close this year's JAPAN WEEK.      September 26, 2024
October “Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets” contributes to the finale of our annual JAPAN WEEK
celebration and to fill our commitment of 65 cherry trees being planted at Pratt & Whitney
Stadium at the Rentschler Field. This relates to 250th anniversary of US founding in 2026.  
Twenty five trees are in addition to the 40 already planted on Earth Day.  
The stadium is owned by the State of CT and is the home of UConn Huskies football team.

Engagement Team and ASPIRES of Collins Aerospace, Windsor Locks and UJSC will lead the
planting jointly.  
 Everyone is welcomed to bring your shovel to dig holes with us for the trees on the green.

本球場は、コネチカット州政府が所有しており、コネチカット州立大学ハスキー フットボールチームの
ホームグラウンドでもあります。

ウインザーロック町に所在するコリンズ エアロスペース社のエンゲージメントチームとASPIRES チームが
我々UJSCとタグを組んで植樹を先導します。
ショベルを携えて我々と穴掘りをやりに来ませんか？ 大歓迎します。

update from Will-san                                                                               September 13, 2024

Dear family and Friends ,
I had my second post treatment MRI and lab tests…everything is going well all the blood tests are in the green zone,
no change in the brain scan (the doctor said no change is what he is looking for at this point). We have to evaluate my meds and will hopefully make changes in another month.  I did have another focal seizure last week , but it reacted to the medication.
 I just have to be careful about too much stimuli. I also still need to get a speech pathologist and an occupational therapist.
 Im back at the gym and have gained 5 lbs of muscle mass since May. Still trying to get my flute playing back(have not taken out the pipes yet).  I have been asked if I thought I would write a book about my experience, but I’m more of an oral story teller.  
So I am working on a talk…working title is “Becoming Wabi Sabi:Learning to Live with Brain Cancer”.  That’s it for now. The next checkup is November.  Thank you for all the support, prayers ( from numerous faiths including my fellow Buddhists in Japan)
and positive thoughts and energy. Ganbatte!!

ウイルさんからの近況便り                                    2024年9月13日
親愛なる我が家族と親友へ、
私は手術後２回目のMRI とラボ テストを受けました。全てがうまく行っているとのことで、すべての血液検査結果も安全圏にあるそうです。脳スキャンの結果にも変化なしとの事です。（この時点で医者が観察しているのは、脳に新たな変化が生じてないかどうかということです。）私の今の処方薬を再検討した上で、希望的には、翌月から処方が変更されるのを待ってます。
先週私は、また焦点発作を起こしました。 でもそれは服用薬に反応した発作でした。 過敏な刺激には、気をつけないといけません。それに、今も言語療法士と作業療法士のヘルプが必要です。ジムにも通い始めましたが、５月以降、筋肉が５ポンド増量しました。 フルートがまた吹けるようになるように努力しています。（バグパイプはまだ挑戦してません。）
私自身の今回の経験を著書にすることを考えたことはないか、と言ってくれる人がいましたが、私はどちらかというと、口頭で伝える方が得意です。だから、”侘び寂びの具現：脳癌と共に生きる学び” という議題のスピーチを今取り組んでおります。
今日はこれだけです。次回の検診は１１月です。（日本の仏教徒の私の同胞を含めた諸々の宗教の皆様方からの）サポートと祈り,そしてポジティブ思考と活力等、私への諸々の思いやりに感謝します。頑張ってます！

Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets - September activities                August 31, 2024

In month of August this year we experienced incredible amount of rainfallr.  As the result
weeds of the mini garden by the Founder’s Bridge and Manchester Land Conservation
Trust site of the Great River Park are wildly overgrown..   
Roots were humongus compared to the stems and leaves above the soil, so we anticipate
the September work to be a challenge to get rid of these weeds around the rock garden in addition
to prepare the pollinator garden strip.

今年８月は、とてつもない降水量でした。その為、ファウンダー橋脇の小庭園と、グレート
リバー公園のマンチェスター保全地の雑草は、ワイルドに伸び放題です。地面下に埋もれている
根は地上に露出している茎や葉よりももっと大きく蔓延っておりますので、９月の作業は、
石庭周辺のメヒシバの除草と帯状のポリネーターガーデン準備の為、我々の奮闘が予期されてます。

Summer is for Weeding and Trimming                                  July 22,2024

During the summer season most of our time was spent weeding and trimming overgrown shrubs.
But we also enjoy watching the colorful flowers and their guests such as bumble bees and butterflies.
        
Yesterday we were invited to Manchester Land Conservation Trust picnic at Bush Hill Preserve in
Manchester.  There I had a chance to discuss about getting some of pollinator plants from the Bush Hill
Preserve for East Hartford Pollinator Garden this fall.

夏は除草と低木のトリミングの季節                               ２０２４年７月２２日
夏季は、殆ど除草と繁り過ぎた低木を刈り込む季節です。
それと同時に、色彩鮮やかに満開している花々やそこに群がるマルハナバチや蝶の訪問者を鑑賞できる季節でもあります。

昨日は、我が協会会員はマンチェスター土地保全トラストグループのマンチェスターのブッシュヒル保全区でのピクニックに招待されました。
そこで、私、内野敏子は、ブッシュヒル保全区で育っている花粉媒介草花の苗をこの秋、イーストハートフォードのポリネーター ガーデンに根分けをして貰えるよう討議してきました。

８月の活動のフライヤーを添付いたします。公園と通りの清掃と美化活動に参加して頂けますよう切にお願い申し上げます。

250 Cherry Trees by 2026 to Celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary   July 4, 2024
In concert with Japanese government's 250 Somei Yoshino cherry trees donation to Washington DC
to commemorate America’s 250th Anniversary of 1778 United States Declaration of Independence
upon Prime Minister Funio Kishida’s visit to the US in April this year, we, i.e., members of Us & Japan
Society of CT and friends set a goal to donate 250 cherry flowering trees also by Year 2026 to
Connecticut-State-owned Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.
This will be the reminder that Connecticut is referred to as the Constitution State.  The US-Japan
Friendship on the grassroots level initiative envisions the survival of liberty and peaceful living for
all people in the world.

In a time of division and fragility of peace in the world, a cherry trees donation signifies and symbolizes
peace and furthermore cherishes fellow travelers of the past and present from all walks of life. For Japanese,
cherry blossoms reside in the core of our heart.
Let’s plant cherry trees at the Rentschler and we want to share our heart with you.

米国建国250周年に先立ち２０２６年までに250本の桜の木の植樹        ２０２４年７月４日
今年４月、岸田首相の米国訪問の際、１７７８年の米国建国250周年記念に先立ち250本のソメイヨシノ種
の桜の木が日本国政府よりワシントンDCに贈呈された友好のジェスチャーに倣って、我々、Us & Japan Society
of Connecticut 会員ならびにその支援者も又、２０２６年までに250本の桜の木をプラット＆ホイットニー
競技場地であるコネチカット州政府所有のレンシュラーグリーンに寄贈するゴールを設定致しました。
これは、コネチカット州が”合衆国憲法の州”であることを想起させると共に、自由の存続と日米両国のみならず
世界中の人々の（Us) 平和な生活を願望する日米友好の草の根レベルのイニシアチブです。

分断と昨今の平和の脆さを実感する世界情勢の中にあって、桜の木の寄贈に我々は、平和の意義と象徴を託しました。
そして更には、過去、人生の旅路で袖触れ合った、そして現在、袖触れ合う人々への慈しみも託しております。
日本人にとって、桜の花は我々の心の奥深くにあるとっても大切なものです。
レンシュラーグリーンに一緒に桜の木を植樹しましょう。そしてこの大切なものを皆さんと共有したいです。

June 8 Activity Report - Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets.     June 12, 2024
With participants from Collins Aerospace engagement team, we weeded, picked up trash and swept the pedestrian walkway and the underpass of Founders Bridge where the New Racial Equity mural is located.  In addition, we transported the donated stones to the designated rock garden site of Manchester Land Conservation Trust property, i.e., the Great River Park, we have been undertaking its improvement for several years.  Those rocks we received today are not placed in the intended positions yet, but we finally brought some of stones to the site.   We are in need of two more larger rocks to layout all of them in beauty of imbalance. However, the place is a lot more fitted per the drawing than it used to be.

The trees you see in one of pictures are healthily growing cherry blossom trees we donated 2 years ago.  
They had beautiful blossoms this spring.

６月８日活動報告書ー”公園と通りの清掃活動をしよう！”       ２０２４年６月１２日
今回はコリンズ エアロスペース社のエンゲージメント チームも参加して、New Facial Equity の壁画が描かれている
ファウンダー橋のガード下とその歩道の草取りと、ゴミ拾い、清掃を行いました。それと並行して、我々が３年前から
環境改善に取り組んでいるグレートリバー公園の一部であるマンチェスター土地保全区の石庭エリアに使用する
為、某団体から寄付していただいた中型サイズの岩石１５個を石庭場所に運び入れました。
頂いた石はまだ適切な場所にレイアウトされておりません。でも、やっと現場に必要個数程度の岩石は移動できました。
”不均衡の美”を表現する為に、まだあと二つ、極力大きな石が必要です。でも以前と比べ、この場所は描いていた絵図に近づき
とってもすっきり致しました。

添付の写真の一つに見る木々は、２年前に我々が寄付し、順調に育っている桜の木です。今年の春とっても美しい花を咲かせました。

Perfect Weather and Perfect Crowd - "Rentschler Field and Us”  Kick-off Event   April 22, 2024

Our kick-off event to plant cherry blossom trees on Rentschler Field green on Earth Day was very successful
and sky was crystal clear blue with utterly no cloud.
A big “THANKS” to Derek and James and their friendly but shy maintenance crew who worked so hard to prepare
for this special day.  They had to pull out existing unwanted trees to make space for Yoshino cheery blossom trees
prior to our kick off event.

Our event was covered as top news by media, State’s, Town’s and Pratt & Whitney Stadium’s bulletins, instagram,
“X” and Facebook etc.  
 
 Attached was the agenda.  In addition to our speakers listed on our agenda we also had a special guest speaker
Mr. Saud Anwar, State Senator to join us. What a wonderful surprise to have all key persons here.

パーフェクトの天候とパーフェクトの出席者ー”レンシュラーとUs” 桜植樹事初め            2024年4月22日

地球の日に開催した我々のレンシュラー球場のグリーンに桜の木を植樹する事初めイベントは大成功のうちに終了。
この日は雲一つない限りなくクリスタルなブルーの青空でした。
この特別な日の準備の為に、ハードワークを厭わなかったデレックとジェームスとそのフレンドリーでちょっとはにかみや
揃いのメンテ要員の面々には感謝感謝の一言しか言いようがありません。彼らは、イベント前に吉野桜を植えるスペースを
整備する為に、かねてより除去したいと願っていた現存する樹木群を掘り起こす作業をしなければならなかったのです。

我々のイベントは、マスメディアのカバレッジ、日本総領事館、州政府、イーストハートフォード町、プラット アンド
ホイットニー球場の通報誌、”x” 、インスタグラム並びにフェイスブックに掲載されております。

当日の式事を添付しました。それに追加して、式事には記載されておりませんが州議会のサウード アンワー上院議員より
特別ゲストとして一言お言葉をいただきました。重要人物の方々を一堂に会してのイベントは我々にとって何と素晴らしい
ギフトだったことでしょう。

“We will keep planting wherever space is available to us,” said Uchino.
Uchino founded the “Let's Clean Our Parks & Streets” group as well as the US & Japan Society of Connecticut.
She counts on local sponsors and supporters to donate to purchase the trees, fertilizer, mulch and planting soil.

Retired from her role in managing Carten Controls, Inc., a US-based Japanese corporation that made valves for the semiconductor industry in Cheshire, she helps connect a network of Japanese Americans.
Obtaining permission from Riverfront Recapture, she replaced some damaged trees with weeping cherry trees, and added azaleas, shrubs and flowering plants to the area.

Monday the Hon. Consul General of Japan, Gregory Boyko, noted Washington D.C. now attracts tens of thousands to visit the blossoming cherry trees. In 1912, 3,000 trees were shipped to Washington D.C. as a gesture of friendship.
“The cherry tree beltway project is a great symbol of friendship and cooperation between our two nations who have a closer relationship today than every before,” said Boyko. Mayor Connor Martin also noted the project symbolizes people coming together, and noted the planting of cherry trees to commemorate the re- opening of the Wickham Li brary last year.
“The cherry blossom is the harbinger of spring and a reminder of the fragility of life and is seen as a sign of renewal and optimism,” said Martin, aspects which are part of the renewal of the nearby Silver Lane neighborhood where apartments and enhancement of the commercial corridor is under- way.

I want everyone to read his third e-mail below It touched my heart as it will let us rethink about our life and Will-san’s vigorous effort to fight back the situation he and his wife, Mako-san are in.
I want to thank them for inspiring us to walk his new path with them as their fellow travelers.  

過去、2回に渡りウイルさんの闘病の近況報告を、私の拙い日本語への翻訳を添付して、私達の協会の活動を通じてウイルさんと交流のあった日本在住の方々も含めて、送付しておりました。お忙しい方もおられる中、今回のウイルさんの報告は、どうしても皆様方にご一読していただきたいと思っております。そして私も又、ウイルさんのこれからの新しい旅への同行者三人目として、ウイルさんと奥様のマコさんの後ろを歩かせていただこうと思っております。

Medical Treatment Update from Will-san                                                                                              

Med update;                                                                                             March 14, 2024 
I realized early this morning that it has been a while since I posted an update. We are just entering week 5/6 of radiation treatment.  25 sessions all together and then I get to ring a brass bell 3x after my last one). After radiation is done,I have two weeks of just the chemo ( pill form) and labs. Then  one week of just observation. We move back to CT on April 15. An MRI and doctors evaluation on the 23rd. I will have these about every 6-8 weeks Then it is a watch and observe process of paying attention to any signs that  the tumor is regrowing. I’m sorry if this part is blunt: glioblastoma has no cure and does not go into remission. Not IF it grows but. when and how fast. There will be eventual lost of function on my left side, but have no idea when. Soooo, I plan to live every moment in the present. Make my plans for the future (trips, music, projects). Time and space are precious to me now, so there will be some shifting of priorities.  Stepping back from lacrosse, but moving to player/ coach for the hurling team. vamping up my health hacks (I did hot/coldtherapy, acupuncture and massage this week) highprotein low carb diet. increasing  health/ fitness routine even more ( adding Tennis)  the last two years at Crossfit have prepared me to deal with this trial ( and the radio oncologists insisted on an aggressive approach). So far, accumulating fatigue and lower leg cramps are the most difficult side effects. The trial drug makes muscle recovery sensitive.  I’m down to just waliking 3-5 miles per day. Music will help the cognitive impact,  I am shifting my focus to Japanese flutes. Scottish pipes and unaccompanied solo trad singing Odd comb, but it makes sense as they are solo traditions.
I’m sensitive to high sensory input,  pub sessions and large performances are no longer in the future.  Mako continues to be my guardian angel.. always by my side as we travel this new path together.  I could not have done this without her.  We are confident we will break all the stats on this thing thank you everyone for support, prayers and best wishes.

ウイルさんからの医療報告アップデート      2024年3月14日

しばらく私の医療アップデートを皆さんに報告していないことに今朝気がつきました。６週間の放射線療法がちょうど５週目に
突入するところです。全部で25回の治療ですが、その最後の施療が終了した時には、真鍮のベルを3回振らなきゃと思ってます。
この治療が終了した後は、化学療法（錠剤服用）と検査だけが残っております。其の次の１週間は経過観察のみ。そして4月15日にはコネチカットへ帰ります。MRI と医者のそれに対する査定が23日にあります。これは約６−８週間毎に実施されます。
その後は、腫瘍が再増殖していないかどうか微細な兆候にも注意を払って、観察されます。これ以降の私が説明している記述があまりにも単刀直入なものだったら謝ります。畢竟、膠芽腫（グリオブラストーマ）を完全治癒する治療法は存在しないし、寛解状態（安定状況）を保持できるという可能性もないということです。言明できることは、もし再増殖しなければではなくて、いつ、
どれだけ早い速度で再増殖するか、という点です。私はやがて、身体の左側の機能が麻痺します。でもそれがいつ訪れるかは全く予知できないのです。だから、今ある一瞬、一瞬を大切に生きていく所存です。私の将来のプラン（旅行、音楽、プロジェクト等々）を立てようと思います。
今は、時とスペースが自分にとって、大変貴重です。その為に、自身のやりたい事の優先順を変更します。今週は寒冷療法、鍼灸、マッサージを受け、それに高蛋白 / 低炭水化物のダイエットと、ヘルスハックスすなわちスーパー健康法でパワーアップに努め、ヘルス/フィットネスの日課の他にテニスも加えました。そしてラクロスを退団して、ハーリングチームの選手/コーチとして入団する。クロスフィット（CrossFit) フィットネス ジム店がこれから２年間この試験的プログラムを私が試してみる事に協力してくれました。（放射線腫瘍医も、もっと攻撃的なアプローチをしろと強く言ってましたので。）
今の所、蓄積してきている疲労と下肢の痙攣が一番厄介な副作用です。治験薬が筋肉の回復に微妙な影響を与えております。1日に、ほんの３−５マイルほどしか歩けなくなりました。　音楽は、認知機能の回復に効果的です。通常ならば伝統的歌謡が伴わうスコットラントのバグパイプ演奏を、其々尺八とバグパイプという奇妙な組み合わせで、自身の個々の努力へと焦点を移行させていってます。でもこれらは本来はソロ演奏が伝統だったのですから、理にかなっております。
私はハイレベルの感覚入力に非常に敏感になりました、従って、パブでのセッションや、大規模のパーフォーマンスを公演することは最早無理になりました。
私の妻、まこは、私の守護天使であり、又旅の同行者としてこの新しい旅路を側でしっかり付き添って歩いていっております。
彼女なしでは私はここまで頑張る事は出来ませんでした。我々は本課題に対する全ての既成データを覆すことができると確信しています。
皆さん、私へのサポートと、祈りと多幸の励ましを有難うございます！

A Kick-0ff Event at Rentschler Field for Planting Cherry Trees  on Earth Day      March 4, 2024

 We celebrate the commencement of this project which is the collaborated effort of Rentschler Field Management and  Us & Japan Society of Connecticut.  We plant 35 Yoshino blossom trees on April 22, and this day hence we keep planting whatever quantity of cherry blossom trees we can obtain.

There is a British remake of Ikiru ( To Live) directed by Oliver Hermanus and screenplay by
Kazuo Ishiguro. The film was released in 2022.
We will be showing an original “Ikiru" directed by Akira Kurosawa who is famous for period film
such as “Seven Samurai”.  It is considered one of the greatest films of all time in Japan.

2024 New Year gathering announcement                  December 20, 2023

After the adjustment with other organizations we scheduled our new year gathering on January 20
to celebrate the year of Dragon.   The Dragon, Tatsu in Japanese is the most iconic out of 12 Japanese
Zodiac signs.  It is the fifth animal and only one imaginary creature, and a symbol of strength, energy
mystery.  
Our organization of hope is the improvement of world peace.

Crafted Benches by South Windsor Eagle Scout Candidate Installed       Dec. 14, 2023
December 10 ( Sun) was our last parks and streets clean-up day of this year.   Instead of cleaning, we conducted the hand-over event of the crafted benches at Manchester Conservation Land site in East Hartford where Us & Japan Society of Connecticut has been intensively undertaking the tasks of cleaning the Westland to turn into the designed pollinator garden for several years.  The depressing, dark looking levee wall once upon a time looks geometric 3D  "objet d’art"  now.
The project of donating two benches to the conservation site is led by Raymond Yumoto Darling, Eagle Scout candidate from South Windsor Scout Troop 186.
They are designed, crafted and installed with the solid concrete base by him.
Thank you for sharing our vision and working with us to enhance our local community improvement.

サウス ウインザー イーグル スカウト候補者により自作ベンチが設置されました。                       2023年12月14日
12月10日（日曜日）は、我が協会の ”公園と通りをクリーンにしよう！” 今年最後の清掃活動の日でした。 その日は清掃活動の代わりに、当日本人協会（Us & Japan Society of Connecticut ）がここ数年、集中的に力を注ぎ、荒廃した土地を整備しデサインされたポリネーターガーデンとしての美観区に作り替えることに取り組んでいるイーストハートフォード町に所在するマンチェスター
保全地に工作ベンチを明け渡すイベントを実施しました。かつては見苦しく見えた灰黒色の汚れた人工堤防のコンクリートの壁までが、今では幾何学的 3D の芸術的オブジェのようにみえます。
保全地に自作の野外ベンチ2脚を寄贈するプロジェクトは、サウスウインザースカウト１８６部隊のイーグルスカウト候補者、レイモンド ユモト ダーリンさんの主導で実現したものです。
これらのベンチは、彼がデザインし、工作し、そしてコンクリートで脚を固定して保全地に設置されました。

我が協会のビジョンをシェアーし、地域社会の向上のために我々と共に働いて下さった事を大変感謝しております。

Our Tree for Peace -Wadsworth Atheneum Museum                                                 Nov. 29, 2023
Monday, we assembled our Christmas tree at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum for the 49th Annual Festival of Trees
and Traditions.  As we were missing of some regular team members who are currently in Japan we had volunteer squad from Greenwich, CT organized by our regular participant, Mrs. Riho Hirohashi.  

Mrs. Keiko Shida left for Japan to care for her mother months ago, but she also left us a heartfelt and stunning surprise, i.e., a  paper-folded beautiful tree-topper and Warabe dolls.  Mrs. Makiko Taylor has just returned from Japan, but joined with us to decorate the tree despite that she is still recovering from jet lag.  Mr. David Klecak delegated for his 12 year-old granddaughter who was our youngest participant.  She could not join with us to assemble the tree as Monday is the school day.
Our tree was tagged “SOLD”and the proceeding will be donated to the museum.
We wish specially for the world peace!

世界平和と友好のツリー  ワーズワース アテネウム美術館                                 ２０２３年１１月２９日
月曜日、今年で４９期目を迎える年中行事「ツリーと伝統の祭典』の為に、ワーズワース アテネウム美術館内で
ツリーの組み立てと、折り紙オーナメントの飾り付けをいたしました。
今回は、レギュラーメンバー数人が只今日本滞在中にて、人材不足でしたが、毎年オールドグリニッジから参加して
下さる広橋りほさんがグリニッジ応援団を組んで、サポートして下さいました。
志田敬子さんは、数ヶ月前に日本に発たれましたが、彼女は我々チームメンバーに、何ともはや心温まる素晴らしい
サプライズを残して旅立ちました。敬子さん、ツリートップの豪華な薬玉と童人形を有難う！
マキコ テイラーさんは、まだ帰国して時差ぼけから日常に戻っていない中、飾り付けの手伝いに来て下さいました。
そして、デービッドクレチェックさんは、月曜日は学校日なので参加できない、折り紙を折って参加した１２歳の
お孫さんの粛々たる代理メンバーでした。我々のツリーには既に買い手がついていて、”売却済み”の札が添付されて
おり、その収益は美術館に寄付されます。

East Hartford New Mayor and Us  and This Year’s Last Cleaning Event                     Nov. 21, 2023

I would like to share our joy with all of you first.  Mr. Conner Martin who was Mayor Mike Walsh’s dynamic Chief of Staff is now a newly elected East Hartford’s Mayor. Mayor Martin along with the former mayor Walsh who issued a proclamation about my activities have been my greatest supporters as to my dream and vision.

South Windsor Eagle Scout Troops 186 & Us.                                                                        Oct. 21, 2023

Saturday Oct. 14 was Hartford Marathon event, which we did not expect at the time of our annual planning of 2023.
East River Drive was blocked with barricades since 6:30am, so we held our monthly “Let’s Clean Our Parks &
Streets” activity on Sunday 15th that is normally our rain date.
South Windsor Eagle Scout Troops 186 joined with us, total of 12 participants including their parents, to work at
Manchester Land Conservation site at East River Drive.   Troops are also donating 2 utility benches used for bench
and tool storage, which they are to make by themselves. These will be placed at the locations where Phlox ground
cover plants are planted at this conservation site.

Our major task that day was to finish covering the rock garden ground with mulch. The troops pulled out weeds and
placed weed control fabric, then plenty of mulch over it.  L shape area is ready for laying out boulders and rocks now.
I enjoyed working with themimmensely.  The scouts are well displined and so eager to do any task.
We look forward to working together again on our upcoming projects.

サウスウインザー イーグルスカウトとUs & Japan Society of CT                         2023年10月21日

2023年の年間スケジュールを作成した時点では予測できなかったハートフォードマラソン大会が土曜日
10月14日に開催されました。その為、その日は朝６時半以降はイーストリバー通りがバリケードで封鎖
されましたので、我々の月例活動である”公園と道路の清掃と美化”活動は、14日ではなく通常雨天の
場合の変更日である日曜日（15日）に実施致しました。
サウスウインザー イーグルスカウト第１８６隊、メンバーの両親も含め１２人、が当日イーストリバー
通りのマンチェスター保全区の清掃・美化活動に集合しました。スカウト１８６隊は又、この保全区に、
隊のメンバーで工作した収納と屋外ベンチ兼用の多機能ベンチ２脚も寄付致します。
この２脚は、この保全区の芝桜植栽予定のスペースに設置される予定です。

15日の主要活動項目は、石庭予定スペースを除草後、防草布を敷き、大量のマルチで覆うことでした。
L 形のこのエリアに大小の石をレイアウトする準備が整いました。
サウスウインザースカウト１８６隊と仕事をして、とっても楽しかったです。メンバー全員が良く
訓練できていて、どんな作業も率先してやってくれました。
これからも我々のプロジェクトを一緒にやれることを大いに期待してます。

Christmas tree creation for Wordsworth Atheneum Museum is in progress.      Oct. 19, 2023
Warabe Japanese dolls in paper folding as our Christmas tree decoration as to 2023 48th Annual Festival of Trees and Traditions at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum is in progress.   I also have a help holding the Origami warabe dolls from our friend in Old Greenwich, who participated this project last year also. She also organized the group of friends in Greenwich to support this project as some of our regular origami members are currently in Japan for various reasons.

This year’s theme of the Festival is “ Greetings from Around the World” to reflect our community’s diverse cultural and familial practices.  
We chose Origami dolls of Japanese children wearing traditional Japanese Kimono on.

The delivery date is Nov. Nov. 27.  We will be decorating the tree inside the museum on 27th (Monday).

ワーズワース アテニウム美術館のクリスマスツリー創作ただいま進行中    2023年10月19日
上記表題の美術館の第４８回目の年中行事である2023年の『クリスマスツリーと伝統の祭典』の為、我々日本人会が選択したツリーの飾り付け作品は童人形で、折り紙での制作が現在進行中です。この制作にオールドグリニッジから昨年も参加して下さった里保さんが,今年も童人形を折って支援して下さっており、それと同時に、今年諸事情で日本での長期滞在を余儀なくされているレギュラーメンバーを補う為に、グリニッジ市で応援メンバーを集めて下さいました。

今年の祭りのテーマは、コミュニティの多様な、文化と家族の慣習を反映して、” 世界のあちこちからこんにちわ！” と題されております。
そして我々は、日本の子供達が伝統的な着物を着ている童人形を千代紙で折って、そのテーマを表現することにいたしました。

ツリーの搬入日は、11月27日（月曜日）です、その日に美術館内でツリーの飾り付けを終了いたします。

Joint presentation with Eagle Scout East Windsor at Board of Directors’ meeting.     Oct. 4, 2023
 I would like to tell you the wonderful opportunity that Us & Japan Society of CT and Eagle Scout East Windsor Troops 186, our supporter for the improvement project, are invited to do a presentation together at the Manchester Land Conservation Trust board meeting on Oct. 19.   
The scout will build the two utility benches that function as the bench and garden tool storage box.   
Along with my summary presentation Mr. Raymond Yumoto Darling will give his presentation about their project at 237 East River Drive’s Manchester Land Conservation site as apart of our on-going volunteered undertaking on the site.

取締役会で、イースト ウインザー イーグル スカウトと共同でプレセンテーション    2023年10月4日
今日は、皆様に、UJSC 日本協会と協会の清掃・美化活動プロジェクトのサポーターとして参入したイースト ウインザー イーグル スカウト １８６隊に与えられた素晴らしい機会をお伝えしたいと思います。ウインザーイーグルスカウトと我々に、10月19日に開かれるマンチェスター土地保全トラストの取締役会で、プレセンテーションをお願いしたいとの依頼が来たのです。
スカウトは、ベンチでありながら且つガーデン用の工具類を収納できるツールボックスとしての用途も兼ね備えたベンチを２脚創作して我々をサポートする事になっております。私のプロジェクトの要約に追随して、我が協会がボランティア活動を現在推進しているイーストリバードライブ２３７番地のマンチェスター土地保全区プロジェクト中の１課題を担当したいと申し出のあったイーグルスカウトの、レイモンド　ユモト　ダーリン君が、仕事の詳細をプレゼン致します。

October “Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets”  activity      Sep. 21,  2023

Our September activity day was rained out and the ground of the followed alternative day was muddy.
we could not finish what we planned to complete. In October We will be picking up some of the work we could
not finish last month.

Our exciting news is that Eagle Scout East Windsor will build and donate two utility benches that can function as a bench but also a tool box. This project team leader is Eagle Scout Raymond Yumoto Darling.
And Ray and I will be doing a presentation together at the Manchester Land Conservation Trust’s Board meeting on October 19.

Eagle scouts involved in this project will join in weeding and rearranging currently planted perennials at MLCT site. They are also interested in our future projects at other locations.

We will be planting approx. 35 chresanthemums for Riverpoint Recapture’s mini-garden by the Founder’s Bridge
to replace summer annuals soon.

Rentschler Field & Us!    July 30, 2023

For many years I have said to my close friends that our ultimate goal as to beautifying the local community, referring the Greater Hartford, is to cover the Rentschler Field ground with abundance of cherry blossom trees.  This will have ripple effect not only to landscaping beauty for the local community and the State of Connecticut but also to many aspects of our quality of life. I have also proposed the town of East Hartford to plant cherry trees along sides of Silver Lane which runs in parallel with Rentschler stadium site.
Attached below is the excerpt of an e-mail from Chief of Staff of the East Hartford Mayor’s Office for your info.

This stadium site donated to the State of CT by yesteryear’s United Technologies, now Raytheon Technologies, is the only place in CT where we can create spectacular scenery but also profound, serene ambiance.

Furthermore, East Hartford is MIchi no Eki in Japanese. i.e., the hub of highways I-84, I-91 and Route 2, and in additon it is approximately 25minutes to Bradley International Airport.
We offer this viewing opportunity to neighboring towns, states and overseas visitors.
Despite the above mentioned geographical merits the town has been in deep sleep or in the plight of depopulation of business entities.  I saw many empty office buildings.

The tucked-in deserted acreage on Silver Lane at where the cinema used to be located a long ago is now turning to up-scale residential community while there is currently massive construction going on behind the Rentschler stadium for the East Hartford Logistics & Technology Park on the 300 acre land, and 37 acres of the other side of MLCT conservation Land on East River Drive is expected to be developed commercially including retail space, medical offices,  apartments, restaurants and a theater.  The demolition of decaying buildings may commence in September of this year.
Futuristic projects will start popping up as though dormant volcanos are erupting.

And concurrently my vision started forming tangible reality along with the above mentioned development.  We will be planting cherry blossom trees at the Rentschler stadium.
I had a meeting with Mr.Derek Miles, assistant general manager of Rentschler Field on July 19 through the introduction of Mr. Conner Martin, Chief of Staff of the East Hartford Mayor’s Office.  
Then followed a second meeting with him and James, his head ground keeper on 25th to determine where to start.  
We will plant two show piece weeping cherry trees in October as we missed the spring planting opportunity this year.  in Spring of 2024, we will plant 35 or more Yoshino trees from the entrance on the silver Lane toward the stadium.  Hence we will add as many trees as we can each year.

I also have the greatest support from both Mayor Walsh and Mr. Martin.  Mr. Walsh decided not to seek for re-election for the second term and Mr. Martin is the next candidate for East Hartford mayor.

Let’s not leave the revitalization of our community,  improvement of our quality of life and civic issues entirely to the municipal government.   Someone said we are in the age that individuals are to move the power of
the governments.   Let’s take the driver's seat and have the government ride with us.

First and foremost you are correct you have now and will when Mayor have a formidable supporter for your work in the Town of East Hartford. Whether it be planting Cherry trees or Japan week, you have committed yourself
to the Town therefore I commit this Town to you.
 
The Cherry Tree plan along Silver Lane sounds significant therefore we should put together a plan and campaign to help with reaching out to the businesses. If you are free next week I am happy to chat and see how we can plan this out.

Month of August "Let’s Clean our Parks and Streets" Schedule           July 17, 2023
Only yesterday, I have finally had an opportunity to replace the dead Evergreen Arborvitae trees.
 I went to purchase the same size, sane species of trees in order to align with the survived ones to Regional Market
on Saturday before the break of the dawn.
When I had them loaded into my vehicle it started raining, so my task of planting was pushed out to yesterday.
By the time I finished it I was bitten all over by mosquitoes despite of my long sleeve shirt. They must have had
a pretty good dinner out of me.

Below is the August activity and may I ask you to share this flyer with your friends so that we may have more friends
to join with us to clean and beautify our environment.

私には、やっと昨日、昨年の植樹をサバイバル出来なかった常緑針葉樹を植え替える為の時間が確保できた。
土曜日朝まだき時刻に、私はリージョナルマーケットに、根付いてくれた樹木と適合するように同じサイズの全く同じ
属種の木を購入する為にでかけた。私の車に２本の木の搬入を終了した途端、雨が降り始めた。その為、植樹作業は
翌日に廻した。
次の日、木を植え終えた頃には、長袖のシャツを着ていたにも関わらず、身体のあちこちを蚊に刺されていた。

Month of July Let’s Clean our Parks and Streets Schedule           June 16, 2023
  Our June activity was to do the ground leveling for the rock garden preparation of Manchester Land Conservation parcel, a part of the Great River Park.  We are undertaking three projects concurrently, i.e,, maintenance and additional planting to the mini-garden by the Racial Equity Mural and the small parcel of the other side of the mural by Founders Bridge belonging both to Riverfront Recapture and the Manchester Land Conservation site mentioned above.
  One third of the Rock Garden was leveled and covered with weed protection fabric and mulch and our plan is to finish  the ground leveling work by July 8 activity.
  Attached is a flyer for July activity schedule and we need many volunteers to help us to beautify the Greater Hartford area to lift up the spirit of SDGs initiative.

”公園や通りを清掃しよう”  7月のスケジュール                 2023年6月16日
6月の活動は、グレートリバー公園の一部であるマンチェスター保全地の雑木伐採と雑草を除草後の整地作業と石庭準備に
費やしました。現在、我々は、３項目のプロジェクトを同時に手掛けております。その３項目とはリバーフロント リキャプチャー非営利組織に所属するファウンダー橋沿いの  Racial Equity (人種的平等）壁画両端の小庭園のメンテ並びにその反対側の小さな荒地の整備と植栽、そして前述のマンチェスター保全地。
マンチェスター保全地の石庭予定地の３分の１は、平坦化し雑草防止布を敷きマルチでカバーしましたので、残りは7月8日の活動で完了する予定でおります。
7月の活動のフライヤーを添付いたします。SDGs イニシアティブ精神を盛り上げ、グレーターハートフォード圏の美化に取り組んでいくにはもっとボランティアの参加者が必要です。皆様方のご協力を切にお願いいたします。

Japan Week 2023 closed the curtain with great applause.          April 27, 2023
The grand opening of Toko Shinoda Exhibition at Art Museum of Univ. of St. Joseph in
West Hartford was on March 30.  And followed by was East Harford Japan Week opening
at the newly renovated Wickham Memorial Library on April 21.
Ms. Jackie Alexander who is the president of Japan Society of Fairfield County attended
our opening event to support our organization commented as follows;
“ It was a lovely opening and tree dedication. All of the arrangements were perfect – dignitaries,
festivities – lion dance, the tree perfectly in bloom, and the weather!
Best wishes for the rest of the week.”

グランドオープニングは3月30日でした。
それに追従してイーストハートフォード町でのジャパン ウイーク オープニングは, つい最近
改修工事が終了し、新規オープンを待つウイッカムメモリアル図書館で4月21日に開催されました。

日本人会会長のジャッキーアレクサンダー氏のコメントをここに記載します；
”素晴らしい開幕と桜の木の寄贈イベントでした。全てのアレンジがパーフェクトでしたよ。政府の要人達

 East Hartford Public Library is proud to announce that Japan Week will stage a triumphant return in 2023 after a pandemic hiatus. Begun in 2018, Japan Week is a week-long series of programs offered in partnership with the US & Japan Society of Connecticut, presented with funding support from the East Hartford Commission on Culture and Fine Arts. Japan Week 2023 events will take place at the two libraries in East Hartford as well as at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford. Please see the poster below.

2018年に始まった「ジャパンウイーク」は、イーストハートフォード町が Us & Japan Society of Connecticut 協会とパートナーを組んで、イーストハートフォードの文化•芸術委員会からの基金の提供で開催する１週間に渡る各種のプログラムのイベントです。今回の「ジャパンウイーク２０２３」イベントは、イーストハートフォードに所在する図書館２カ所と同時に、ウエストハートフォード市の聖ジョゼフ大学も連携して開催します。

下記は、人間としての存在理由を再考させる２０２３年２月5日付の日刊紙ハートフォード カラント新聞の「編集部宛の書簡」欄にグリッケン夫人が寄稿した記事です。
彼女は、ニュースに取り上げられる最近の憎悪に満ちた悍ましい出来事を憂慮し、1月29日の国際ホロコースト記念日の為にこの記事を投稿しております。
この映画は、コネチカット州米日協会とその他の教育機関や宗教団体が協賛で上映したと語っておりますが、我々団体の正しい表記は、Us & Japan Society of Connecticutで、Us は、もちろん米国であるthe US を意味しておりますがそれと同時に世界中の全ての人々をも包括しているのです。　畢竟、この映画上映の意図は、我が組織の活動の根幹でたゆとうなく反映される国籍、人種、宗教等の相違の全てを超えた、一つの確固たる我々の信念を顕示して企画し上映されたものです。

Readers Speak: Doing the right thing amid the horror  

 The international Holocaust Remembrance Day was Jan. 29.  In light of the recent terrible hate-filled
 Events in the news, I bought it would be uplifting to write something positive.  
 On Oct. 14, 2018, I attended a wonderful event called “ persona Non Grata” at the University of St. Joseph
 in West Hartford.  
 
 Presented by the  United States and Japan Society of Connecticut, United Synagogues of Greater Hartford,
 and the University of St.Joseph.  It was an inspiration; true story about China Sugihara, a Japanese who saved
 thousands of Jews from Nazis by issuing them visas to escape Europe. He was stationed in Lithuania before
 World War 11 and saved 6,000 lives by defying the orders of his government and issuing transit visas from
 Lithuania via train to Moscow.   From there thy traveled via the trans-Siberian railroad to Vladivostok and on to
 Kobe, Japan.  From there they went to Shanghai, China, and elsewhere.  As a consequence of his heroism,
 there are 40,000 descendants of these refugees.  All of  this occurred before Japan attached Pearl Harbor.  
 Sugihara was against a war with the United States and warned that Japan would never win against the United
 States and Great Britain.  What motivated him todo what he did?  He stated. “Do what is right because it is right.”  

 In this sad time where There have been a number of massacres, including many incidents of antisemitism, it is
 important to know about Sugihara and people like him.  I believe it is especially important for children because
 they need heroes.  

 There were other heroic diplomats including Hiram Bingham from Connecticut and Aristides de Sousa Mendes
 in Portual, each of whom also saved lives.  

 On April 9, 1940, Germany occupied Denmark.  There a Nazi official warned the Jews of Denmark about an
 upcoming roundup by the Nazis.  As a consequence, no Jewish lives were lost.  

 In Rhodes there was a Turkish Muslim diplomat named Selahattin Ulkemen who saved loves.  In retaliation, the Nazis bombed his house and killed his pregnant wife.   There were a number of other diplomats who saved people’s lives.  
 Many lost their careers as a result.  They were all heroes and were in an exhibit called Visas for Life at the University of Hartford.

New Year Gathering and Japanese Dolls Donation Ceremony     Jan. 21, 2023

Happy New Year ! and 明けましてお目出とうございます。       
This year is the Year of Rabbit( U –Doshi  in Japanese 卯年) , 4th animal of 12 in Japanese animal zodiac ( Eto).     Animal Zodiac was used as an agricultural calendar to see the growth of the crops. The Chinese character Usaghi represents Safety of the Family as a rabbit always looks calm and gentle and Great Leap as it jumps.

Although we are still cautious being together we finally decided to get together to share a joy of the auspicious celebration after two years of interval due to Corona and its variant pandemic.

Traditionally Osechi new year foods are served in tiered beautiful lacquered box or individual bento box, but today a portion of  Osechi foods were made by some of us here in order to be economical.  And most of dishes have a special meaning.  For instance,

Black Beans (Kuro-mame)
  Mame is bean in Japanese. There is also a word  “Mameni hataraku”
  that is “work diligently” So the wish is that eating them foster healthy
  diligence in the year ahead.

Red and White Fish Cake ( kouhaku Kamaboko)
  Kamaboko is made by shaping minced fish into a half-moon shape.
  The red and white fish cake eaten at the new year suggests the first  
   sunrise of the year.  Red and white color combination is considered
   auspicious as red wards off evil spirits and white represents purity.

Sweet Rolled Omelet ( Datemaki)
   Rolls which is Maki is connected with books and learning,    
   representing a wish for academic success.

Pounded Burdock Root ( Tataki Gobo)
   Burdock root is mild and earthy with a taste similar to artichoke. It’s a  
   deep root that grows straight down into the ground and symbolizes   
   stability for the house and family in the new year,

Dried small sardines (Tatsukuri or Gomame)
    Since I can not purchase the exact type of small sardines I used the  
    one available in the US.   The name Tatsukuri , literally meaning rice
    farming, comes from a custom to scatter baby sardines in a field.  The    
    Kanji, Chinese character for Gomame is written as 50,000 grains of
    rice, also symbolizing the wish for abundant crops.

I also want to summarize our activities in 2022 and 2023.
Our organization has three pillars of activities.
They are;
1. Art and Humanism
2. Ninja & Us Help Hot Line
3. Sakura Manbon which means 10,000 cherry trees and Let’s Clean
   our Parks and Streets

For Art & Humanism
- In September 2021, although it was originally scheduled in 2020,   
  「Tajima in Relief 」Exhibition postponed due to Corona pandemic  
  and opened in September 2021 at Art Museum of Univ. of St. Joseph.
  At the grand opening of Tajima Exhibition we donated one Snow
  Fountain weeping cherry blossom tree to the Art Museum to celebrate
  the conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck
  Ribbon upon Mr. Gregory Boyko, Honorary Consul General of Japan  
  issued by the Ministry of Foregn Affairs of Japan.

- We had a on-the-street fund raising “ for Help Children of Ukraine”      
  three times last year at the Blueback Square and Maruichi Food &
  Deli store front in support of UNICEF New York’s same campaign.

- In December, we participated in the Festival of Trees and Traditions at
  Wadsworth Atheneum Museum. This is our every year project.  We   
  have a team consist of approx. 12 people to create a Christmas tree.  
  Some of team members are here today and the team helped cooking
  today’s  new year food, also. Last year’s motif was Peace for Ukraine.     
  The person who is in charge of the festival event at the museum
  commended our effort stating that we always deliver something unique  
  and meaningful.

- I want to introduce Takehiro Hirohashi today who is here with
  his mother and sister. We have a display of his cutting and folding
  paper creation at the hallway along with Origami dinosaurs of
  Hatano Brothers, Mizuki ( 12 years old) and Hiroki ( 9 years old) .   
  They could not join us today as they attend weekend school. Those
  Origamis were to display at Wethersfield Library in November as a
  part of Dino-vember Event at the Children’s Corner. Unfortunately
  Children’s Corner was flooded due to water piping burst. Hopefully
  the library plans such event again when they reopen the Children’s
  Corner.

For Ninja & Us Help Hot Line
- in 2021 there were several families settled in the Greater
  Hartford as expatriates. Two families were from Japan and
  went back to Japan last year. Many of us helped for them to be able to
  settle comfortably here. While their household goods from Japan
  were in transit we helped donating furniture, lamps, dishes  etc. etc.   
  However most challenging and time consuming things for them were  
  SS # acquisition, bank account opening, finding an suitable apartment,
  purchasing an automobile and getting a drivers license etc. etc…..  We
  could not solve all these items at once and needed to take sequential
  steps.

- Our volunteers support the needy and the troubled. This is our core
  activities of Ninja & Us.  

For Sakura Manbon and Let’s Clean Our Parks and Streets
- We have a monthly basis activity schedule for the entire year.
  However, once a month is not enough. Therefore, some of us do work
  whenever maintenance work or picking up trash on the streets is needed.
  Mini Garden of  Riverfront Recapture by the Founder’s Bridge on the
  East River Drive is almost complete. We planted one weeping cherry
  trees and 7 Azaleas.  Many of flowering plants and  ground cover plants
  were donation from friends of Us & Japan Society of CT including Mrs.
  Ayako Jedika who is here today. We will continue to maintain this
  garden.

- We donated 35 Yoshino flowering cherry and 7 weeping cherry
  trees to the campus of Univ. of St. Joseph in 2021 and 2022.
  In addition, we also donated 55 pollinator shrubs and plants in 2021  
  and 35 pollinator shrubs and flowering plants in 2022 to Biology Dept. of
  Univ. of St. Joseph.

- We also started cleaning up Manchester Land Conservation Trust parcel
  of the Great River Park that was once a contaminated site.  
  First, we removed the invasive vines that covered over burning bushes
  which are also regarded as invasive alien species. Burning bushes were
  cut down per Manchester Land Conservation Trust recommendation.     
  We donated and planted 4 Yoshino cherry, 1 weeping cherry and 7
  evergreen trees last year. Then we plan to embody SDGs friendly
  but artistically presentable site as a part of Great River Park.     
    
This year in April, actually starting with Toko Shinoda Exhibition opening  on March 30 followed by Earth Day event on April 20 at Univ. of St. Joseph,  we have multiple events at the various locations. Japan Week at the town   
of East Hartford kicks off with the reception on April 21st with Steve and Ako-sans’ Shishimai lion dance at the newly renovated Wickham  Memorial Library donating two willow cherry trees with  presence of E. Hartford Mayor and Hon. Japanese Consul General.

Mr. Garrett Groesbeck who plays Koto, Japanese string instrument today will be playing at the grand opening of Toko Shinoda Exhibition. Garrett  will be also performing for Intersections Concert Series on April 27 having  
direct connection with Japan Week and the Concert Series. We have  Izumo Shochow, Japanese classical dancer arriving from Japan to collaborate with Garrett’s Koto and perform at East Hartford and a master  class at Dance Dept. of Univ. of St. Joseph.  Michiko Imai, calligrapher will be performing brush stroke performance on the floor at Art Museum lobby for Earth Day event and calligraphy class at East Hartford Senior  Center.

We will also start Cinema Tonight this year again introducing old and new Japanese films which has been on hold due to Corona.

Our gathering opened with Steve and Ako-sans’ Shishimai Lion Dancing to wish you a happy new year,  then Garrett-san’s serene tune of Koto music to celebrate auspiciousness.  Everyone’s  effort made the gathering such joyful one and hope everyone went home with blissful spirit to start the new year.

Ms. Alice Newton’s Speech
Good Afternoon,
Thank you inviting me to today’s festivities. My name is Alice Newton. I am a librarian at the Wethersfield Library. I am here today to accept a very generous donations of dolls from the North Mianus School to be displayed and cared for by the Wethersfield Library.
In 1995, then Wethersfield Town Manager, Lee Erdman visited Nagayo Japan and fell in love with the landscape and culture. In 1997, he created a Proclamation, declaring Wethersfield and Nagayo “sister cities.”
In 2008, Nagayo officials came to Wethersfield to visit the town. A tree was planted in front of town hall to mark the occasion.
The sister city relationship flourished in 2010, when a Wethersfield elementary teacher visited Nagayo to tour its schools and thereby formed a relationship between the two elementary education systems. The schools still maintain the relationship, sharing cultural and customs. Just last year, in 2022, to mark the 25th anniversary of the sister cities, Nagayo school children were given a red onion food dish during lunchtime. Wethersfield is known historically for the cultivation and harvesting of the red onion.
In 2014 a book club was started. The Wethersfield Library donated copies of the Witch of Blackbird Pond, a work of fiction set in Wethersfield. Ten Nagayo residents joined the club and read and discussed the book.
We sincerely hope our sister city relationship will continue for the next 25 years and beyond.
Thank you for furthering the relationship with your generous donation of dolls. These beautiful works of art will be lovingly cared for by Wethersfield. We will proudly create a display for our residents to see them and they will serve as a reminder of our very special relationship with Japan.

Christmas Tree Decoration at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum     Nov. 28,2022
 
Ten days ago I posted our progress making Christmas tree ornaments.
Today was the day to assemble our tree at the museum.   The title was "Our prayer for
People and Children of Ukraine”.   While we were assembling the tree, museum staff and those who
participate in this annual event came to see our tree frequently and made heartfelt comments.
“Your group always delivers something very special.” so said a museum representative.
They instantly understood what the tree meant without seeing the title.

 ワーズワース アテニアム美術館でのクリスマスツリーの飾り付け　　　2022年11月28日
１０日前に、クリスマスツリー用のオーナメント作成の進捗状況を掲載しました。
今日はそのクリスマスツリーを美術館で組み立てる日です。ツリーのタイトルは ”ウクライナ国民と
子供達への祈り”。　我々がツリーを組み立てている最中、美術館のスタッフさんや、この祭典に参加

して自社のツリーの飾り付けをしている人達が頻繁に我々のツリーを見に訪れ、心温まるコメントを

下さいました。”あなた方のグループはいつも何かとってもスペシャルなものを創作して下さいます。”

と、祭りイベントの代表の方の弁。うわさを聞いて我々のツリーを下見に来た方も、タイトルを見ず

して、ツリーの伝達しているものを一瞬にして理解して下さいました。

2023 ”Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets” Schedule.       Nov. 24, 2022
When this is posted Thanksgiving Day is over and I hope everyone
had relaxing day and/or joyous family gathering.    

Our 2023 cleaning schedule is all set.
In case that our activities should interfere with public events that have not been announced yet
to date we will notify you our revised date in timely manner.
Our planting activities for Riverfront Recapture’s mini-garden in 2023 may be lesser while we
are committed to continuing maintenance work.  One remaining planting this year is Hosta.
I reserved the spot for those roots that were given to me by my friend.

Three triangle shape areas are designated for seasonal flowers as we want people to sense the
seasons. Chrysanthemums were for the fall and tulip bulbs planted this fall for the coming spring.
 
Next year we will move to and focus on Manchester Conservation Trust land as to the improvement
of soil and planting.  A hand-drawn plan has been circulated for your review.
Let’s clean and beautify our parks and streets as though they are the extension of the front yard and
garden of our own house.

2023 年”公園や通りをクリーンにしよう！”月例スケジュール　　2022年11月24日　
この広報が掲示される頃には、感謝祭は終わっています。誰もが、寛いだ１日を過ごしたか、
若しくは家族と共に楽しい団欒の時を過ごした事を願います。

２０２３年の清掃活動のスケジュールが決まりました。
現時点でまだ決定されていない来年の公的行事の開催日と、我々の活動日が重複し、相互に妨げとなる場合は、

迅速に、その変更内容をお知らせ致します。
リバーフロント リキャプチャー小庭園の植栽活動は２０２３年には縮小の予定です、一方、庭園の手入れは
しっかり継続していきます。今年、一件だけやり残している植栽は、知人におすそ分けしてもらったギボウシです。
兼ねてより、この根の為に確保しておいたスポットがあります。
そして、三角形の定規の形をした三箇所のエリアは、歩行者が季節の移ろいを共有できるように、秋は菊、
来るべき春にはチューリップと、四季折々の花の開花を楽しめるように花壇としてレイアウトしてあります。

来年は、マンチェスター保全区に移行し、ここでの土壌の改良と植栽活動に集中します。以前、手書きの略図を
リリースしておりますのでご覧ください。
公園も公道も、自身の持ち家の裏庭やら花園の延長だと思って、公園や通りの清掃や美化運動に参加しませんか？

2023  New Year Gathering announcement                Nov. 21, 2022
We have a new year gathering at last that has been cancelled for the past two years due to Corona pandemic.
Let’s rekindle our friendship and catch up with what we have missed and share some laughs and enjoy good
Japanese Osechi new year foods plus and Koto music.  And of course, let’s not forget we all want to be
nibbled on our head by Steve’s Shishi ( lion) for blessing, especially for good health and safety.

２０２３年新年会のお知らせ　　　　　　          　　2022年11月21日  
  コロナ禍状況下で、過去２年はキャンセルになっていた新年会を、今回はついに開催できる運びになりました。
疎通だった互いの友情を再び温め、過去２年の消息を語り合い、一緒に笑いあい、美味しいおせち料理等を食べ、
琴の調べを愛でましょう。そして、勿論、スティーブさん扮する獅子に、特に無病息災と安全をお願いして我々の
頭を甘かみして貰い、来たる一年を祝福して貰うこと忘れないように！

Festival of Trees and Traditions, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum          Nov. 17, 2022

We are putting on a last spurt on a Christmas tree making for the above captioned event at the Wadsworth
Atheneum Museum, Harford, CT. This annual event at the museum is one of our annual projects, too.  
We are the regular contributor to this event. We challenge and design a tree that is artistic and talkative-in-silence.
Our Christmas tree task team headed by Mrs. Misawa Carter has been working on ornaments since early
summer this year. They are paper folded blue and Yellow dove hanging ornaments, a white dove with
a sun flower in its mouth on the silver Kusudama ball surrounded by Ukrainian flags.   The tree skirt will be
decorated with sun flowers.
We created this in hope of peace and a ray of bright light that shines on people of Ukraine.

The tree will be assembled by our team at the museum on Nov. 28.
I will report to .you again when the tree is completed.

『クリスマスツリー祭典と伝統』ーワーズワース  アテニアム美術館        2022 年11月17日
コネチカット州ハートフォード市に所在するワーズワース アテニアム 美術館で開催される上記標題のイベント
で、展示されるクリスマスツリー作成に最後のピッチで取り組んでおります。当美術館のこの年中行事は又、
我々Us & Japan Society of Connecticut 協会がチームを組んで毎年手がけるプロジェクトでもあります。
我々は、このイベントのレギュラー貢献団体です。そして、折り紙チームは、芸術的且つ無言が語りかける饒舌性
もそのツリーに託してツリー創作に挑戦しそのデザインを構想します。
みさわ　カーターさんをそのリーダーとする我々のクリスマス  ツリー  タスクチームは、本年初夏より、このツリー
のオーナメント作りに勤しんで参りました。それらは、折り紙で作成した、青色と黄色の２種類の吊り下げ用の鳩や、
ウクライナの国旗を周囲に施した銀色のくす玉のトップに、向日葵を口にして巣篭もりをした白い鳩のオーナメント。
そして、ツリーのスカートは、向日葵で飾られます。
我々は、平和への願いと、ウクライナの人々に明るい希望の光が注がれることを願って、このツリーを作成することに
したのです。

このツリーは、１１月２８日、美術館に組み立て部品を搬入し、館内にて我々のチームが最後の仕上げを致します。
完成作品に関しては後日、又報告させて下さい。

Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets. - November Activity                                                   Oct. 29, 2022
The foliage in New England has reached at its peak and Today is another beautiful day but the temperature again was low thirties in Fahrenheit in morning.  Winter is creeping in quietly.
It reminds me of the cycle of life in nature.  We planted shrubs, perennials and bulbs for the coming spring hoping the winter brings peace and tranquility to everyone.

Attached is a flyer for our November activity of Sakura Manbon and Let’s Clean our Parks & Streets.  We will focus on weeding at Manchester Conservation Land in order to prepare planting pollinator plants and shrubs in spring.
We hope more volunteers joining with us.

１１月の公園と通りの月例清掃活動のお知らせ。　　　　２０２２年１０月２９日
米国ニューイングランド地方の紅葉がピークを迎え、今日も又素晴らしい秋日和です。でも今朝はここ数日と同様、華氏30度前半の外温です。しのびよる冬の到来を感じます。

この時季は、自然の生態の循環を想起させます。この冬が、全ての人々に平和と平穏をもたらす事を願い、来るべき春に備えて、この季節に低木や宿根草や球根を植栽しました。
１１月の”桜万本と公園と通りを綺麗にしよう！”月例清掃活動のフライヤーを添付致します。１１月は、マンチェスター保全区で来春計画の、花粉媒介用草花と低木の植栽の下準備の為に、雑草の除去に焦点を当てて活動します。

October Activities - Let’s Clean Our Parks and Streets                                               Sep 17, 2022
When I get up in the morning I watch the sunrise through the glass of my 13th floor window now.  It was brilliantly bright and the sun was above the ridge of mountains only several days ago.
I see the arrival of the autumn.  I do not perspire any more when I do the garden work at the mini-garden and MLCT conservation site.
Yesterday, I went to purchase perennial plants, bellflowers and Allium Millenniums, to add some accent in the Ground Cover Sedums and planted them in the mini-garden by the bridge yesterday.   Soon we will be adding chrythanthemums to the mini-garden as I want for the locals to sense the season’s change.
Attached below is our work schedule for next month.  I have included the hand drawn schematic diagram of the MLCT site plan.

We need everyone’s help to achieve this site plan.  Work is arduous and simple, but the fulfillment in participating on this project, I believe, is rewarding.  Please give us your hands a little.

朝起きると、今は、日の出を私の階のガラス窓から眺めてます。つい先日までは、山並みの尾根の上部に太陽が燦々と輝いていました。
秋の訪れを感じます。もう、小庭園での庭仕事でも、MLCT保全地区での整備にも汗ダクになることはなくなったし………。
昨日は、ファウンダーズ橋の小庭園にちょっとしたアクセントを加える為に、多年生草（桔梗とアリウムミレニアム）をガーデンセンターに買いに行き、グランドカバーセダムの所々に白色の桔梗を、小さな２つの岩のロケーションには、紫の桔梗を添えました。
やがて重陽の節句です。季節変わりを、この界隈に住む人々にも感じていただければと思い、小庭園のペチュニアが終わった後の花壇は菊の花で埋めていきます。

来月の清掃活動のフライヤーを添付いたしました。その中に、マンチェスター保全地区サイトの整備プランの手書きの略図を掲載しております。
この企画を成功する為には、多くの方の参加が必要です。きつくて、そしてシンプルな作業かもしれませんが、このプロジェクトに参加したという充実感は、かけがえのないものであると私は信じております。
ほんの少しだけ我々に手を貸していただけませんか？

On the Street Fundraising Campaign -Let’s Help Children of Ukraine.      July 30, 2022
Yesterday we were at Webster Walk, Blue Back Square for On the Street Fundraising Campaign for Children of Ukraine. This was our second campaign at Blue Back Square.
The temperature was close to 90 while we were standing at the Webster Walk circle where normally concerts and festivals are held.
We set up a table and chairs under the shade.  Someone from the above may be caring on us.  we had a cool breeze all the time.

Due to a mid-day of the weekday in addition to the hot weather there was less traffic at the Blue Back Square.  Despite such conditions, we felt that it was worth doing it.  
We have stories to share with you that touched our heart.
One elderly gentleman who searched every space of his wallet to empty bills after bills to our donation box, a young gentleman who has a friend in Ukraine said with teary eyes that he talks to his friend in Ukraine almost every day.  As he did not have cash then, he promised to come back with a cash and returned.  The father of a family of 5 gave $1.00 to every family members including a toddler. This father’s intention was so precious to us.  Donators thanked us so many times.   
Furthermore, we were photographed by a passer-by news reporter who grabbed our flyer and had to hurry off for a meeting.

I will keep you post the date and time of our next month campaign.

街頭募金活動ーウクライナの子供達を救おう！　　２０２２年７月３０日
昨日私達は、ウクライナの子供達の為の街頭募金活動で、ブルーバック スクエアー ショッピングセンターのウエブスター  ウオーク 円形広場に立っていました。
ブルーバック スクエアーでの活動は今回で２回目です。　通常はコンサートや祭り等の行事に使用されるウエブスターウオークのこの広場の温度は、華氏90度に近かったと思います。日陰にテーブルと椅子を設置しましたが、誰かが天空から我々を見守ってくれていたのでしょうか、我々の居る所には絶えず涼しい風が吹いていました。猛暑に追従して、平日の日中でもあり、ブルーバックスクエアーの人通りは少なく、にも関わらず、私達はやりがいがあったなあ、と追想しています。そして私達の心がジーンと来たモーメントを皆さんとシェアーしたいと思います。
一人の老齢の紳士は、ポケットから財布を取り出し、自分が紙幣を入れたであろう場所を隈なく点検し、出て来た紙幣を全て募金箱へ。知人がウクライナにいて毎日電話で話して居ると目を潤ませて語る青年は、今現金の持ち合わせがないから取りに帰って戻ってくると。そして戻って来てまた去っていく青年の後ろ姿が、とっても悲しそうだっだ。　5人家族の父親は、家族全員に１ドルずつ手渡し、幼児も含めた家族全員で寄付をしてくださった。父親の思い入れが、とっても貴重で有難かった。
寄付をして下さった方々からは、何度も繰り返しお礼の言葉が返ってきた。
最後に、通りすがりの報道記者が、偶々我々に出くわし、写真を撮って、ミーティングに遅れるからと、我々のフライヤーを手に持って、急ぎ足で消えて行った。

Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets August activities    July 20, 2022
August activity flyer is attached below.  
We will be working on Manchester Land Conservation site and the small lot next to the
Racial Equity Mural site at where I have been pulling overgrown invasive plant species.
We want to plant flowers with purple, red, pink, white and blue colors to align with the
mural to enhance the continuity of articity.

  As to our month of June campaign we have generated $1,175.40 in total from the generous support of

  UNICEF NY Children of Ukraine.

海外年金相談センターからの吉報です。                                        　　　２０２２年７月１０日

コロナ勃発以前に、私の住むコンドミニアムの一階の宴会場で日本の年金に関して、講義をしていただきました市川さんより下記のメールを受信致しました。市川さんはその後、有志と共に、海外年金サポートセンターオブアメリカを設立し、日本で受給する米国のソーシャル　セキュリティベネフィット受給額が、受給総額ではなく源泉徴収された額が送金されており、その矛盾を是正すべく、たゆまざる活動をしておられます。

特にアメリカで長年の駐在生活を送られた方や、アメリカ在住を日本居住に移行される方々にとっては、年齢を得て年金生活を送る際、受給額の減額は自身の生活の質にも影響して来ます。

市川さんはじめ藤本光さん、ガラスキー秀子さん、其の他ボランチィアの方々等、尽力して下さっている方々に心から感謝です。

SSAからの吉報!! 国民年金はWEPの適用外と決定!!　

SSA（米国社会保障庁）から2022年7月1日付けで、日本の国民年金はWEP（Windfall Elimination Provision棚ぼた条項）の適用対象外であるという通知が、Strategic and Digital Communications 室のJeffrey Buckner長官補名でメールで関係先に発送されました。突然の吉報がもたらされました。

（注：WEPとは日米の年金を受給すると米国年金の一部が最大月額$512減額されるというSSAの規定。適用対象は「勤労」に基づく年金で、「居住」に基づく「年金」は適用外。しかしながら実体は「居住」に基づく国民年金も減額の対象となっており、この誤適用を解消すべく「海外年金相談センター」は活動して来ました。）

通知によれば、（１）SSAは日本の国民年金受給者でWEP適用者の給付額の計算方法のレビューを行った結果、日本の国民年金(Japan’s National Pension)は居住に基づく年金であり、WEPを適用しないと決定（２）日本の国民年金受給者で、現在WEP適用の対象となっている方の記録をレビューし修正する（３）その結果、受給者に還元すべき年金給付があれば、自動的に支払をするとの３点が記載されています。

以上の基本方針が広報されたわけですが、詳細は不明で、今後確認して行く必要があります。Japan’s National Pensionは「老齢基礎年金」部分に該当すると思いますが、その定義やこれまでの誤適用者への返還金の算定方法、返還スケジュール、新しいルールの適用開始日及びガイドラインがどのように広報されるのか等々です。

振り返れば、私がWEP問題を知ったのは、外務省が始めた「領事シニアボランティア制度」の第１期生として2003年から2006年NY総領事館で勤務していた時でした。2008年外務省に対して「日本の年金のＷＥＰ適用除外」の要請をしましたが、「他国の制度に関する問題である」の回答で終わり、以降はもっぱらWEP制度の広報活動に努めることになりました。WEPについて全米の日系紙、日系人会への投稿や訪米しての講演を重ねました。殆どの方が初めて知る規定で、納得できない減額に驚かれ義憤を覚えられました。ソーシャルセキュリティーの受給申請をしたら、突然大切な老後資金が減額される事実を知り、嘆かれる声も多く寄せられるようになりました。

2016年国民年金に対するWEPの適用で米国年金が減額された方から相談を受けた際、SSオフィスに減額の根拠の確認を勧めました。本部に問い合わせた上でのオフィスからのレターによる回答は、本部は国民年金はWEPの対象との回答だが、自分たちは対象外であると思うという実にフェアーなものでした。私はその回答に動かされ、「国民年金へのWEP誤適用問題」に本格的に取り組むこととなりました。

2018年1月外務省北米2課を訪問し、国民年金のWEP誤適用の是正を要請。在ＮＹ日本国総領事館あてに取り組みの促進を促す投稿をＨＰや米国各地のフリーペーパーで呼び掛けた結果、この是正問題はワシントンＤＣの在米日本大使館で担当する旨の訓令が2018年８月に外務省から発令されました。

以降、大使宛早期解決を求める投稿キャンペーンを開始。全米の日本商工会議所・日系人会・日本人会にも投稿を依頼した結果、ＮＹ商工会議所、ＮＹ日系人も要請文を会頭、会長名でそれぞれ送付して下さいました。また、日本からワシントンの在米日本大使館を訪問したりしましたが進展は見られませんでした。

そうした中で，2020年夏以降、在米日本大使館の担当の方との定期的ミーテイングやSSAとのレターのやり取り等による問題解決への更なる取組を進めてきました。また，皆さんのご協力を得て、誤適用早期解決の嘆願書をSSA及び大使館宛に提出もしました。

そして，今年に入り、米連邦議会の米日コーカスからSSA長官宛，検討の加速化を要請するレターが発出されるなど，本件への理解，協力が着実に拡がっていった結果，今回一定の成果に結びついたものと考えます。

今回の発表は、日米から年金を既に受給してる方、将来受給する方にとり、老後の貴重な財産の確保や、老後の生活設計が可能となる大きなインパクトをもたらすものであり、官民が協力して取り組んだ大きな成果と言えます。

これまでの皆さんのご支援、ご協力に心から感謝します。また前述の通り今回の決定の詳細が不明ですので、皆さんからの参考情報をお待ちしています。

「海外年金相談センター」では５名（３名は米国在住）のボランティアメンバーで本件誤適用問題に取り組んでいますが、最終決着がつくまで頑張りますので、引き続き皆様のご支援をどうぞ宜しくお願い致します。

Let’s Help Children of Ukraine Campaign.                                         May 21, 2022
It took me more than two months to make it go..
First I consulted it to Mr. Setsuo Ohmori, Japanese Consul General in Boston.  His advice was to donate
the fund locally where it was collected rather than sending it to Japan.
Then we had to acquire a permission from West Hartford town to do the fundraising campaign at BlueBack Square.  

Our collected fund goes to UNICEF USA Children of Ukraine in New York.  Please see the attached flyer.

Let’s help children and families who are in need of desperate help.  Our organization’s Us of Us & Japan Society stands the USA and all of us in the world transcending all differences in nationality, race, ethnicity and religion, and hope peace will be upon them soon from the bottom of my heart.

ウクライナの子供達を支援しようキャンペーン！            ２０２２年５月２１日
本活動を纏めるのに２ヶ月を要しました。
先ず、ボストンの大森摂生総領事にご相談しましたところ、総領事殿からのアドバイスは、日本へ送付するよりも
募金を募った地に寄付するのが妥当です、との返答でした。
其の後、私達はブルーバック スクエアーで街頭募金活動をする為に、ウエスト ハートフォード町役場よりウエブスターウオーク広場使用許可証を取得しなければいけませんでした。

集めた募金は、ニューヨークの国際連合児童基金ユニセフのChildren of Ukraine 宛に寄付されます。フライヤーを添付致しましたのでご参照下さい。
或る日突然、悲惨な状況下に置かれた子供達や家族を一緒に支援しようではありませんか。私達の協会のUs & Japan Society のUs がが意味するものは、 USA のアメリカであり、国籍、人種、民族そして宗教のバリアを超越して全世界の我々、の和合を意味しています。
ウクライナに平和が１日も早く戻りますように心から願っております。

The stolen plant and a shy visitor                                                                 May  15, 2022
On Wednesday May 11,  I was at the mini garden of Riverfront  Recapture for almost 6 hours to weed and trim the shrubs.   My car was in the service for two days for overhaul and I was stuck in the house, so I decided to spend all day at the garden to catch up with my TBD list there.  I trimmed the strikingly brilliant, red Azalea shrub which was in full bloom while three other Azaleas of different colors were still in buds. Next morning I returned to work there to find out there was a big cavity between white and orangish Azaleas.  Vanished was the red one which I carefully groomed in shape previous day.  This was not a vandalism, but someone dug with shovel to replant it somewhere else.

That Saturday Misawa-san and I went to Regional Market to purchase the same shrub to fill in the hole, but they were sold out at 6:15am.  Next day I was there at 5:00am and got one with a partial financial contribution from Mr. Larry Williams. He has been picking trash on East River Drive on regular basis, but recently he also joined with me to weed the mini-garden by Founders Bridge.

While I was planting the new shrub something was watching me by the Forsythia.  It was Opossum. He, I assumed, once in a while glanced at me shyly and discreetly, so I started talking to him. He stayed with me almost 1 hour.  If there will be the next encounter, I can give him a nifty name.
The replacement plant is as beautiful as the one we lost.

盗まれたツツジの樹と内気なオポッサム　　　　２０２２年５月１５日
５月１１日水曜日は、草取りと低木の剪定で、リバーポイントリキャプチャー公園の小庭園におおよそ６時間程居ました。私の車がオーバーホールの為に、２日間修理工場に出してあり、その間、私は自宅に閉じ込められている状態でしたので、この際、その庭園での作業項目を片付けていこうと、１日を庭園で過ごす事にしました。私はその日、三本の色の異なるツツジは未だ蕾なのに、はっとする程鮮やかな満開の赤い花をつけているツツジの木を剪定しました。翌朝、作業続行の為庭園に戻って、白とオレンジっぽい色のツツジの間にポッコリ大きな穴が空いている事に気がつきました。前日、注意深く形を整えたあの赤いツツジが姿を消していたのです。そして形跡からして、これは悪戯ではなく、誰かが別の場所に移植する為に、ショベルで掘ったのだと確信しました。

土曜日、みさわさんと私は、掘られた穴を埋める為に、同じツツジを買いにリージョナルマーケットに行きました。でも午前６時１５分には、そのツツジは売り切れで、その翌朝、又５時に戻り、ラリーウイリアムズさんからの一部金銭的援助もあり無事その潅木を確保しました。ラリーさんは定期的に、イーストリバー通りのゴミ拾いを手伝って下さってますが、最近はファウンダー橋の小公園の草取りにも手を貸して下さるようになりました。

前日買ったツツジの木を植えていたら、何かが私をレンギョウの木の側から、視ているのに気がつきました。何とそれはオポッサムでした。彼は、私は自分勝手に雄だと推定、内気な、控えめな様子で私を時々チラッチラッと見るので、彼に話しかける事にしました。１時間位は話し込んだでしょうか。又今度会えたら洒落た名前をつけてあげるからね〜〜〜〜。

失った木の代わりに植えた赤いツツジ、以前のツツジと同様とっても素敵です。

Work-In –Progress of Beautifying the Park – with Shakukei(Borrowed Scenery)
 April 25. 2022

Our shakukei ( Borrowed Scenery) is the Riverpoint condo building, the bare concrete levee wall and Hartford’s skyscrapers cross the Connecticut River. Our organization and Manchester Land Conservation Trust jointly planted ４cherry trees at MLCT’s 237 East River Drive preserve on  April 15 .  Shakukei is a part of my lecture ‘ Integrating the Natural World with the Arts in Japan’ at Univ. of St. Joseph.   This is my interpretation of contemporary style Borrowed Scenery.  Even a Dingy, bare concrete wall signifies the raison d’etre  as an artistic object to me.

「借景」を背景に公園の美化活動只今進行中。　　　　２０２２年４月２５日

我々の借景は、リバーポイント コンド ビルとコンクリートも露わな人工土手の壁とコネチカット河対岸のハートフォードの摩天楼。UJSC協会とマンチェスター保全地トラスト協会は合同で４月１５日MLCT保有の237East River Drive の保護地区に桜の木四本を植樹しました。「借景」は私の聖ジョゼフ大学での‘日本ではどのように自然とアートが融合しているか’の講義の一部でした。
そしてこれが私の今様の「借景」の解釈です。薄汚い粗雑な土手のコンクリートの壁も、私は、芸術的オブジェとして自身の存在理由を主張する価値があると思っております。

Conferment Ceremony for Hon. Gregory A. Boyko                 April 22, 2022

On 13th of April, 2022, It finally took place after several years of postponement due to Covid-19 and I was invited to celebrate the conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon on
Mr. Gregory A. Boyko, Honorary Consul General of Japan in Simsbury, CT.  Mr. Boyko has been our roll-up sleeves supporter in many areas of activities.
He was a keynote speaker at the book talk and signing event of Janice Nimura, author of 'Daughters of the Samurai’, at Noah Webster Library, and also a supporter of Japan Summer Festival that I was a founder.
With him, our organization did ‘Hanga Now’ and ‘Tajima in Relief’ exhibitions at Art Museum, ‘Persona Non Grata’ exclusive film showing at Autorino Theater and Sakura Manbon cherry blossom trees and native trees, shrubs and pollinator plants planting at Univ. of St. Joseph along with Mr. Setsuo Ohmori, Japanese Consul General in Boston.

In addition, I want to thank Mr. & Mrs. Boyko who invited me to pick Fuji apples at their orchard every fall. Half of apples I pick goes to a Syrian refugee family whom Atty. Leslie Ohta has been supporting as her extended family since their arrival to the US.  Remaining half goes to Japanese seniors whom Ninja and Us is supporting.

We have been so blessed to have him as our honorary Consul general.

グレゴリーボイコ名誉総領事への叙勲伝達式　　　２０２２年４月２２日

２０２２年４月１３日、Covid-19の為に延期されていたグレゴリー A. ボイコ在シムズベリー日本国
名誉総領事に対する旭日中紋章叙勲伝達式が実施され、私も招待されました。
ボイコ氏は、これまで我が協会の多岐にわたる活動を本腰を入れて支援して下さいました。ボイコ氏
とは、ウエストハートフォード市ノアウエブスター図書館での「Daughter of the Samurai」の著者ジャニス  
ニムラのブックトークとサイン会の基調講演、私が企画したブルーバック スクエアーの恒例行事Japan
Summer Festival, 聖ジョゼフ大学では、アートミュージアムで’Hanga Now’ 展,　田嶋インレリーフ展、
アウトリーノ劇場で’ペルソナノングラータ’特別試写会、そして在ボストン大森総領事殿と共に’桜万本’と
’公園や町の通りを綺麗にしよう！’活動も支援していただいております。
又毎年秋になると、氏の果樹園にりんご品種Fujiを摘みに来いと、ご夫妻から招待を受けます。取ったばかりの
りんごの半分は、米国に避難民として到着した当初から自身の家族の延長としてレスリー太田弁護士がサポート
しておりますシリア人家族へ届け、残りの半分を日本人並びに日系人のシニアの方にお届けしております。
ボイコ氏が名誉総領事として在任されておられることを我々は本当にラッキーだと思っております。
ここに我々の感謝の意を込めて、”ボイコさん御目出度うございます。

Embracing our Environment – How Nature is integrated with Arts in Japan  Lecture    April 17, 2022

Due to the uncertainty of Corona pandemics, now it is called Corona xe variant, we did not expect many attendees in person,and some attended remotely. I covered the integration of the natural world with the arts broadly as some of the content may be irrelevant to the environmental and cultural regime of the US from that of Japan. I hope that the essence of my presentation will contribute some innovation and inspiration to think outside of the box creatively to embrace the environment we live in and co-exist with all the creatures on earth.

環境保全に取り組もう- 日本ではどのように自然とアートが融合しているかの講演　   2022年4月17日

コロナパンデミック、最近はコロナxeと呼ばれる変形株へ変貌、で先行きの見えない懸念もあり、多くの出席者は期待しておりませんでした。でもリモート参加をされた方が数人おいでになりました。日本に於ける自然とアートの融合という内容も部分的には、米国の環境並びに文化的背景を鑑みた場合、的外れではないかとお思いになられたかもしれません。私の今回のプレゼンの要旨が、我々の住処であるこの自然界を敬い、この地上に生息する生きとし生けるものとの共存の向上に、既成概念に囚われないクリエイティブな発想で考える事のできるイノベーションとインスピレーションに幾分なりともお役に立てばとの私の思いからの議題でした。

Dear friends of Us & Japan Society of Connecticut,   April 16, 2022
Now tulips are flowering and day lilies, irises, sedums and peonies are sprouting.  And there is a new thing happening under the Founders Bridge.  Yes there is a gigantic mural in progress.  As the weather was so great on March 26 I decided to do the garden work at the mini-garden by the Founders Bridge.
Then there was a gentleman who approached me with a big smile.  I said “Hi” thinking him my neighbor at Riverpoint condos.  He introduced himself as a mayor of East Hartford. He was Mr. Mike Walsh.
He said that he heard a lot about me and said that he was going to get a permit for me as to a levee subject matter I enquired on 237 East River Drive, i.e., Manchester Land Conservation site. He also mentioned that the city can help funding us for our activities.
 I also met Mr. Conner Martin, Chief of Staff, and Ms. Rosamond White, Executive Secretary, of Office of the Mayor on March 30.   I talked about 237 East River Drive site issues and my vision on the town.  I meant the role and contribution of East Hartford to the Greater Hartford.

チューリップが花咲き、甘草、あやめ、弁慶草、ボタンが芽をふきだしはじめました。そして、今ファウンダーズ橋のガード下では新しい出来事が起こっています。そう、何と巨大な壁画が創作されています。３月２６日は大変天気の良い日でしたので、ファウンダース橋横の小庭園で庭の手入れをする事にしました。そしたら大きな笑みを浮かべて私に近づいてくる男性がいました。私は、その男性がリバーポイントのコンドミニアムに住む自分の隣人だと思い“ハーイ”と挨拶しました。彼はイーストハートフォードの市長だと私に紹介しました。マイク ウオルシュ市長だったのです。
彼は私に、“貴方の事は、いろんな所からいろいろ伺っております。そして 237 East River Drive, つまりマンチェスター保全地の人工土手の土木強度の課題に関する私の問い合わせに関しては、許可が下りるように市長室が
協力する"と言って下さいました。そして又、私達の活動に関しても財政援助をしましょう、と後押しして下さいました。
私は市長室付首席補佐官、マーチィン コナー氏と市長室長のロズモンド ホワイト氏に３月３０日に会い、237 East River Drive 保全地の課題とイーストハートフォードに対する私の描くビジョンを伝えました。つまり、グレーターハートフォード圏に於けるイーストハートフォードの役割と圏への貢献という立ち位置でした。

’日本に於ける自然界とアートの一体化’と題する、４月１３日の聖ジョゼフ大学での私の講演は、当大学並びに我々Us & Japan Society of CTにとっても、アースデイ（地球環境を考える日）ウイークの、プレ オープン イベントでした。アースデイ週末の我々の’公園と通りを清掃しよう’活動のお知らせをここに掲載致します。参加される方々には、社会的にも市民としても、大変意義ある活動に参加なさるのだとお伝えさせて下さい。
今回我々が取り組む場所は、かっては汚染地と指定されていた保全地です。汚染がクリアーされた後も、放置され雑木と蔓に絡まっていた荒地を、美観の庭園にする為に我々が取り組んでおります。皆様方の協力を切にお願い申し上げます。

YEAR ２０２２ LET’S CLEAN OUR PARKS & STREETS and SAKURA MANBON

BELTWAY Kicks Off.                                          Feb. 22, 2022

Us & Japan Society of Connecticut will kick off 2022 Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets activities along with Sakura Manbon Beltway on March 12 ( Saturday).
Hope we see some sprouts of tulips at the Great River Park mini-garden by Founders Bridge. These tulip bulbs were donated by a garden center in Windsor and we planted them late autumn last year.

We have donated native shrubs and pollinator plants to University of St. Joseph’s Biology Department and they will be planted during Earth Day week this year.  Also, we are currently waiting for a response from Univ. of St. Joseph about their choice of delivery season and the date for one weeping cherry and 15 Yoshino cherry blossom trees.

Then planting flowering annual and perennial plants and trees will also take place at the property of Manchester Land Conservation Trust as our concurrent effort.
During the winter we have not done much trash picking due to snow and freezing temperature, so we expect a lot of trash to pick on Kick-off day.
Please come to join us to smell crispy fresh air of early spring.

“公園や通りをクリーンにしよう！”と“桜万本ベルトウエイ”　

２０２２年活動事始め　　　　　　　　　　２月２２日

Us & Japan Society of Connecticut は上記表題の２０２２年度の活動を３月１２日（土）付で、開始致します。ファウンダーズ橋沿いのグレートリバーパーク小庭園のチューリップがそろそろ芽を出す頃。この球根は昨年ウインザー町の園芸センターの方に戴いたもので、昨年、晩秋の頃に植えました。
今年も又、聖ジョゼフ大学の生物学部に原生の低木や受粉媒介用の一年生と多年生植物を寄付しました。これらはアースデーにちなんでその前後に植えられる予定です。
又、現在、枝垂れ桜１本と吉野種１５本はどの季節とどの日に配達するのが最良なのか本校からの返事待ちです。マンチェスター コンサベーション ランド トラスト会社（非営利団体）の保全地に一年生と多年生草、そして桜の木を植える活動も同時進行中です。

冬の間、降雪と凍りつく寒さの為に、ゴミ拾いはあまりできませんでした。事始め１２日は多くのゴミの収集が予想されます。ゴミ拾いに参加して、春先のキリッと張りつめた清々しい空気を味わいませんか。

 The year 2021 was extraordinarily busy year for our organization.
Despite of and/or due to pandemic, we bustled to solve time sensitive issues that demanded swift actions, we focused on the plans workable in the TIME of COVID VARIANTS projecting the coming years situation in mind and we planted seeds to grow and broaden the scope of our activities to serve for the betterment of our local communities.
The most notables among activities were; Tajima in Relief finally opened in the fall at Univ. of St. Joseph, The Festival of Trees & Traditions, an annual event at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum cancelled previous year, took place this winter and we donated our Christmas tree. These are a part of our activities of Art & Humanism.

Sakura Manbon Beltway and Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets have been right  on the  tracks.  We added one weeping cherry tree and Yoshino cherry trees, total of 36,and native species of shrubs and pollinator plants to Univ. of St. Joseph campus, have been working to convert the overrun mini-garden to an aesthetically and  eco-friendly site having pulled weeds and useless shrubs, and have cleaned up and trimmed the trees of the outdoor amphitheater of the Great River Park managed by Riverfront Recapture (NPO), and as to Manchester land Conservation Trust’s rundown site, we removed vines and revitalized to be ready to plant cherry trees this year.  Many passers-by commented with nice words..  We want to thank those who donated cherry trees, perennial flower roots and bulbs, garden soils, trash bags and labor etc….and furthermore, we are very excited to inform you that Japan Society of Fairfield County joined our endeavor to cover Fairfield County and Westchester County, NY to start with.

At last, our most challenging was Ninja & Us Help Hot Line.
As said “No two men are alike”, person’s pain, hardship and predicament are different based on their raised environment and the current conditions they are in.  We, volunteer Ninja members, are committed to be with a person in need unconditionally and follow through.  The content of support is shared only with specific supporters of each case and kept confidential unless the recipient requests otherwise, so the details of Ninja activity is excluded from this report.  
Some cases are still open and active for over years. We predict we will be bustling  This year also as usual.

Year 2022 is the year for us to strive for  “deeper and broader “ based on the ground work that we undertook last year.   
It is crucial for local communities, our members and friends participate to those activities expressed above in order to bring it as a routine, not special events, otherwise it is not sustainable.
With our wish expressed above, please let us hope and share our organization’s new year resolution with you.

2021年は大変多忙な年でした。
Covid パンデミックに関わらず、そしてCovid パンデミック故に、即時対応しないといけない事案に奔走し、将来に向け準備すべき企画を推敲し、よりよい地域社会作りに貢献できればという主旨で種まきをする年でもありました。
その中で、特記すべくは、Art & Humanism面では秋にはついにTajima in Relief 展が開催され、昨年キャンセルになった伝統行事、ワーズワース美術館のFestival of Trees & Traditions に例年通りクリスマスツリーを寄付出来た事。
桜万本ベルトウエイとLet’s Clean Our Parks & Streets が軌道に乗り、昨年も、枝垂れ桜と桜の木（計３６本）と原生種の低木、花粉媒介草花を聖ジョセフ大学に寄付、そして、リバーフロント リキャプチャー非営利団体運営のグレートリバー公園の荒れ果てた小庭園の整備と造園、野外アンフィシアターの清掃、マンチェスター保全区の荒地の復活、通りすがりの方々のコメントが嬉しかった。多くの方々に、桜の木や、多年生宿根、球根、園芸用土やゴミ袋,そして労力等を寄付して頂き、地理的には、フェアフィールド郡、NY州ウエストチェスター郡までこの活動が波及した事です。
そして一番のチャレンジは、Ninja & Us Help Hot Line でした。
１０人１０色と言われるように、人の苦痛、苦難、苦境も各個人の様々な育った環境や現状の相違で又色々。私達ボランティア忍者メンバーは、レシピエントにひたすら寄り添い、フォローアップしていきます。　活動内容は、各タスクに協力して下さるボランティアのみが共有し、レシピエントが望まない開示をする事はありません。従ってここでの年次御報告も控えさせていただきました。長年に渡ってサポートしている事案もあり、今年も又多忙であることを予測しております。
２０２２年は、我々が前年、土台を固めた活動を広範に且つ深く掘り下げていく年でもあります。そして上述全ての活動が平常化されるには、地域社会の住人と皆様の参加無しには持続可能ではありません。その願いも込めて、今年のUs & Japan Society of CT の新年の抱負を皆様方と分かち合えれば幸甚です。

2022 Let’s Clean Our Parks & Streets Activity Schedule             Jan. 1, 2022
Our  Kotohajime ( first activity of the new year) will be held in March based on our learning from 2021 activities.
We have scheduled two weekend days for each month. You may participate both days or either on Saturday or Sunday.
Cleaning location, place to gather and time etc. will be detailed in our monthly reminder flyer.
We adjusted our schedule according to the public events that our cleaning work may interfere.   
If there is any conflict, such as bad weather or other reason, we will inform you its change prior to the scheduled date.
We hope many more people join with us.

２０２２年度公園と公道の清掃活動日程表                                        　２０２２年１月１日
今年の清掃事始めの行事は、昨年の経験を基に３月に行う事に致しました。
毎月、土、日曜日と２日を日程に組んでおります。土、日曜の両日又は、土曜日若しくは日曜日いずれかに参加できるように日程を作りました。
清掃場所、集合場所、時刻等々は、月々配布するフライヤーにてお知らせ致します。
又、例年開催される公的行事を考慮に入れ、それらのイベントに私達の作業が邪魔をしないように、今年のスケジュールを調整しております。
例えば悪天候や何らかの理由で私達の活動が困難な場合は、事前に変更内容等をご連絡いたします。
私達の活動に賛同して多くの方が参加されることを願っております。

Tajima in Relief Exhibition Video        Dec. 12, 2021
The above captioned exhibition at the Art Museum of University of St. Joseph closed its door on Dec. 11.  This exhibit preparation started 6 years ago and was supposed to open in April last year with a big-scale multiple grand opening events.
Performers from Japan had purchased airline tickets already but cancelled a trip due to Corona pandemic and many activities were scaled down.
Despite of all of hardship, we had a beautiful opening on September 24 this year.  
Below is the link to the video that was put together by University of St. Joseph. Those who visited the Art Museum during the exhibit would enjoy seeing it again and especially those who did not get to see it in person may appreciate viewing it.

田嶋インレリーフ展のビデオ         2021年12月12日
聖ジョセフ大学のアートミュージアムで開催されました上記表題の展覧会は12月11日を持って閉展致しました。この展覧会の準備は６年前から進行していて、本来ならばスケールの大きい多彩なイベントとして昨年4月に開催する予定でした。
日本から招聘しておりました伝統芸能家の方々は既に米国への航空券を購入されておりましたが、コロナ禍故にイベントがキャンセルになったり、関連行事も縮小されてしまいました。
斯くなる困難にも関わらず、今年9月24日付で見事な展覧会の開催が実現しました事を大変喜ばしく思います。このお知らせの最下段に、聖ジョゼフ大学が作成致しました展覧会のビデオのリンク先を記載致しました。
美術館を訪れこの展覧会をご覧になった方々はこのビデオを通してもう一度ご鑑賞下さい。そして特に鑑賞の機会がなかった方々は、このビデオを通して田嶋作品を体験して下さい。

Christmas Tree Decorated for Festival of Trees and Traditions at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum         Nov. 29, 2021

Nov, 11,  UJSC members and friends assembled a Christmas tree for Wadsworth Atheneum Museum’s <Festival of Trees and Traditions> in the Avery memorial Building where Picasso, Miro, Dali and other well known artists’ master pieces are displayed.  The title of our tree is; Amabie and its Yokai-Watch Friends.  As I explained about the intended purpose of this year’s tree in my Nov. 10 post, Amabies and its Youkai friends are holding a multi-color ball over their head in hope of the prompt eradication of the pandemic and world peace.  The colors of ball symbolizes ethnic diversity, respect and tolerance.  Furthermore, please look at the face of each Amabie and Yokais.  Those innocent monsters’ face expressions make us all burst into a big smile as though each participant is tossing their heart-warming message and thought over to us via their work of art.  Cheers to Ms. Misawa Carter led Ori-hime (Paperfolding princesses) and two white tigers troop !

ワーズワース  アテニアム美術館の＜クリスマスツリー祭典と伝統＞のツリーの飾り付け              ２０２１年11月29日

11月29日、上記表題の美術館の恒例行事＜クリスマスツリー祭典と伝統＞のツリーをピカソやミロやサルバドール ダリの絵画が展示されているAvery Memorial Building で組み立てました。UJSC の今年のツリーのタイトルは『アマビエとその妖怪ウオッチ フレンド』。
9月10日付で皆様にご報告しましたが、アマビエと妖怪は。パンデミックの早期収束と世界平和の願いを込めて、人種の多様性と尊重と許容を象徴する多彩色のくす玉を頭上に掲げております。それにも増して、アマビエと妖怪の一つ一つの表情をご覧になって下さい。ミサワ カーターさん率いる織姫軍団と２白虎の創作者一人一人の思いがほっこり伝わってくる心の温まる、思わず顔を綻ばせずにはいられない楽しい作品が皆さんにエールを送ってます。

Manchester Land Conservation Trust Dinner & Trustee Annual Meeting 2021 Oct. 20, 2021

October 15 the above titled event took place and our organization was asked to join with members and volunteers of Manchester Land Conservation Trust (MLCT).  The trust works to protect water, air, and habitat for animals and plants in natural surroundings.  In addition our organization also contributes to beautify the natural environments.  They have over 500 acres of conservation lands in Manchester and its neighboring towns in Connecticut.

Our organization’s vice president, Misawa-san and I went to the gathering to meet members and supporters of the Trust. We were featured in the Land Trust Powerpoint presentation 2021 reported by the Trust’s president and are now on their Facebook whenever our activities relate to their conservation land and our current work specifically is Riverfront Park.  Next spring, we will start planting Yoshino cherry trees and perhaps one or two weeping cherry trees at the conservation site.

２０２１年マンチェスター緑地保全信託の夕食会と年次理事会の夕べ　２０２１年１０月２０日

１０月１５日, 上記表題の行事がありました。そして我々UJSC もマンチェスター緑地保全信託法人（MLCT）の会員やボランティアグループと一緒に参加しないかとお誘いを受けました。この信託会社は、水源保護、クリーンエア、動植物の生息、生育を保護する為自然環境保全の活動をしている非営利団体です。そして我々は、その活動も含めた上で、その自然環境保護地に美的景観を創意工夫する活動に貢献しております。この法人は現在、コネチカット州のマンチェスター市並びにその隣接市町村に５００エーカー以上の保全地を保有しております。

我々UJSCから副社長のみさわさんと私が、この団体の会員と支援者の方々に挨拶する為にこの集まりに参加しました。我々の活動が、本団体のプレジデントによる２０２１年MLCT年次報告パワーポイントプレゼンテーションの中で紹介され、現在そしてこれからもMLCTの保有地内での活動、特に現在我々が集中的に取り組んでいるリバーフロント公園区での活動はその都度、彼らのフェイスブックに記載されていきます。来年の春より吉野桜１０数本と、枝垂れ桜予定数２本を手始めに、毎年増植する計画で進めております。

The grand opening of Tajima in Relief was a perfection!          Sep. 24, 2021

The rain that kept falling since this morning stopped in the afternoon.  And the sky was crystal clear by the time the university had scheduled to commence a grand opening event and the welcome and remarks were done outside in front of the museum entrance as planned due to the Corona measure.
At  6:15pm, the grand opening celebration of Tajima exhibition kicked off with Steve and Ako Longs’ Shishimai, a lion dancing along with his smooth English narrations on Shishimai. The attendees were enchanted and enlightened when they learned the purpose for Shishimai.
The University president’s welcome and remarks came first.   Then, I was honored to speak about Hon. Gregory Boyko on behalf of members and friends of Us & Japan Society of Connecticut who was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbons by the Japanese Government last April.  It is belated, but we donated one snow fountain weeping cherry tree to Univ. of St. Joseph in commemoration of his award to express our appreciation. He has been and is a great supporter and advocate of our activities bridging US and Japan culturally and is devoted to the local community and our projects here.  We chose this university for Mr. Boyko’s tree as he and our organization will continue to work on the quality projects collaborating with this university in the coming years.
Lastly,  the opening was closed with a speech by Mr. Setsuo Ohmori, a Consul General of Japan in Boston. He drove from Boston to celebrate with us this special event. Then we strolled  in the museum.   Mr. O’Hare’s Shakuhachi, bamboo flute, deepened the serene tranquility in the exhibition hall.  What a luxurious time we spent!

Seeing is believing.  Do not miss this opportunity to see Tajima’s Creative Hanga works.

田嶋インレリーフ展のグランドオープンは全てがパーフェクト！ ２０２１年９月２４日
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
朝から降り続けていた雨は午後には止み、展覧会のレセプション開催時は快晴のような青空でした。そして予定通り、コロナ対策の為、歓迎スピーチは野外で。
６時１５分、田嶋 イン レリーフのグランドオープンを祝福する英語の流暢な語り口でスティーブさんとあこさんの獅子舞が始まり参列者は魅入り、その舞に納得。大学長の歓迎と感謝の挨拶、そして、昨年４月に日本政府より旭日中紋章を授与されたグレゴリー　ボイコ名誉総領事の栄誉を記念して、遅ればせながら、スノーファウンテン枝垂れ桜の木を聖ジョゼフ大学に寄贈するUJSC並びに有志一同を代表して私が、地域社会における我々一同の活動に多大な支援を賜った感謝の意をボイコ名誉総領事に表敬させていただきました。
最後に、この日を祝して、ボストンからお越しいただいた大森摂生総領事のお言葉で、ご挨拶は幕を閉じ再び館内へ。ウイル　オヘアーさんの尺八が、美術館内の静寂に心地よく、大変贅沢なグランドオープンだったと思います。

百聞は一見に如かず！田嶋宏行の創作版画。このチャンスに見なきゃ損です。

＜Festival of Trees and Tradition 2021＞– Wadsworth Atheneum Museum     Sep. 10, 2021
This annual festival event which we participate in every year was cancelled last year due to Covid-19. This year, we have been in preparation to create a Christmas tree since February to cheer up locals despite of knowing that it may be cancelled again. On September 6, we have submitted our Festival of Trees and Tradition contributor form to Wadsworth Atheneum Museum.

The title of our tree is; " Amabie and its Yokai friends". Amabie is a Japanese mythical creature "Yokai" that is believed to stave off pandemic.  Amabie and its Yokai friends are holding a colorful ball that symbolizes the diversity and inclusion in the prayer for health and world peace.
We will report to you again when our decorating team finish assembling it at the museum.

＜クリスマスツリー祭典と伝統 ２０２１＞ — ワーズワース アテニアム 美術館  ２０２１年９月１０日
毎年UJSCが参加していたこの年中行事であるイベントは、昨年はコロナ禍の為にキャンセルされました。今年は、我々は地域住民を励まそうと、再びキャンセルになるかもしれないを想定しながら、それでも２月から本課題に取り組み、クリスマスツリー創作の準備を始めました。　
そして、９月６日、実施の吉報を機に　<クリスマスツリー祭典と伝統> 参加者書式に署名しワーズワース  アテニアム  美術館に提出致しました。

我々のツリーのタイトルは、“アマビエと妖怪フレンド”です。アマビエは、日本の伝説で語り継がれている創造上の生き物“妖怪”で、流行の感染症を食い止めると信じられている日本の神話上の妖怪です。アマビエと妖怪フレンドは人々の健康と世界平和 の祈念を込めて、人種の多様性の尊重と許容性を象徴する多彩色のくす玉を頭上に掲げております。
美術館で飾り付けチームが仕上げの組み立てと飾り付けをした後、また皆様方に最終作品の報告をしたいと思います。

Grand Opening and Reception - Tajima in Relief　　　　　　　　Sep.3, 2021

It took a 2 year long preparation prior to the originally scheduled grand opening in April, 2020, and thereafter one and a half year postponement due to the Covid pandemic.   "Tajima in Relief Exhibition" will take place and open its door to the public with free of charge at University of St. Joseph’s Art Museum, Friday, September 24, through December 11, 2021. Please do not miss this precious opportunity to see his works.  Below is the excerpt of our "Tajima in Relief" flyer posted on our Home Page and Facebook on July 27, 2021.  We are proud to be a supporter of this exhibition. 

  -This exhibition is the first comprehensive museum retrospective of relief prints by Tajima Hiroyuki (1911-1984), a major Japanese artist internationally renowned for his use of layered and luminous color and his complex and creative printmaking techniques. Featuring more than 60 prints made between 1961 and 1984, it examines Tajima’s recurring themes and his approach to abstraction. As a major innovator in sosaku hanga(creative prints), Tajima exemplifies the inventive incorporation of international trends that characterizes post-WWII Japanese printmaking.

グランドオープンとレセプション　—　田嶋インレリーフ展   　2021年9月3日

当初の２０２０年４月開催の準備に２年が費やされ、その後コロナ禍で１年半の延期を余儀なくされた『田嶋インレリーフ展』は、聖ジョゼフ大学のアートミュージアム美術館にて、今年９月２４日（金曜日）にグランドオープンが実現しました。入館無料の美術館でのこのショーは１２月１１日まで開催されます。田嶋の創作品を観覧する貴重なチャンスをお見逃しなきように！　２０２０年７月２７日付でUJSCのホームページとファイスブックに記載しました田嶋インレリーフのフライヤーの一部をここに転載いたします。そしてUJSCはこの展覧会の支援団体であることを大変光栄に思っております。
 ーTAJIMAIN RELIEFは、重ねの手法と蛍光色の使用、そして複雑でかつ創造性に富んだ版画作りの技巧で世界的に高名な日本人芸術家、故田嶋宏行（1911-1984) によるレリーフ版画を全体的に包括して企画した、世界の美術館では初めての田嶋宏行回顧展です。１９６１年から１９８４年にかけて制作された作品６０点以上を展示した作品群を通して、田嶋が抽象に対峙し、限りなく繰り返すそのテーマとアプローチを体験していただきたいと思います。創作版画（sosaku hanga) の重要な革新者として、田嶋作品は、世界第二次大戦以降の日本の版画を特徴付けている、当時ワールドトレンドであった独創性を自身の作品に創り込んだ実例です。

Joint Effort with East Hartford Rotary Club starts from August activities –
“Let’s Clean Our Parks and Streets”.        Aug. 11, 2021

Ms.Lori Goeckler e-mailed Mr.Steve Long and me with the caption “Re: April's Cleaning Parks and Streets”on July 18.  It is a bit outdated inquiry but you know why when you read the following;

I hope this event was a success!!
I have long missed it, but came across the notice you had published in the Gazette that I had cut out, but unfortunately it got mixed up with unimportant papers.   
I'm wondering if you have any more clean-up efforts planned, or if you would like help organizing another.  I belong to East Hartford Rotary, and maybe we can combine forces.

７月１８日、ロリ ゴクラーさんからスティーブ ロングさんと私宛に,“４月の公園や通りをクリーンにしよう”の件に関して、という標題のメールが届きました。いささか遅すぎる問い合わせですが、その理由は下記の彼女のメールを読めば納得：

  ガゼット紙に掲載されていたあなた方の＜お知らせ＞を偶然見つけて、その記事を切り抜いていたのですが、不幸なことに長い間、重要でもない書類の中に紛れてしまって、連絡が滞ってしまいました。将来、又清掃イベントを予定されているのかどうか、もしそうでなければ、もう一度清掃イベントを取り纏める手伝いをしていただけないかどうか、考えてます。私は、イースト  ハートフォード  ロータリークラブに所属しております。そして、この活動に関して恐らく我々２団体は力を結集出来るのではないかと思っております。

「Tajima in Relief」Retrospective  Exhibition is the Sure Thing at Univ. of

  St. Joseph    July 27, 2021
The above captioned exhibition originally scheduled in April 3-Jun. 14, 2020 is postponed
due to Covid-19 and it's definitive grand opening will take place on Sep. 24 , 2021.

We are donating an additional 10 Yoshino cherry trees this fall.  It was originally planned
to take place with「Tajima in Relief 」in 2020. Our members Steve and Ako Long will
perform Shishimai-Lion Dancing and Prof. William O’Hare will be playing Shakuhachi

bamboo flute for the opening reception on Friday, September 24.  Then in November,

a tea ceremony will be performed by Mamiko Hongo and us.

“Summer is flying! The Art Museum is experiencing good attendance at our current

exhibition, and we anticipate an enthusiastic audience for Tajima in the fall”.

聖ジョゼフ大学での「田嶋 イン レリーフ」回顧展ついに開催実現！ ２０２１年７月２７日
２０２０年４月３日から６月１４日が開催期間として計画されておりました上記表題の展覧会はCovid-19の為に、

開展延期を余儀なくされましたが、念願叶って２０２１年９月２４日グランドオープニングにこぎつけました。
 
２０２０年に開催予定だった「田嶋インレリーフ」を記念してグランド　オープニングの一環として寄贈することに

なっていた吉野種桜の木１０本は、今年の開催を祝して手渡されます。そして、オープニングのレセプションには、

UJSC会員のスティーブ＆アコ　ロングご夫妻の獅子舞、ウイリアムオヘアー教授の尺八の演奏が披露されます。
展覧会中盤の１１月には、本郷真実子氏率いるUJSC会員による茶道のデモンストレーションが計画されております。

Our long awaited cleaning activity was pushed out to the following day from Saturday to Sunday, June 13, because of morning rain. Sunday was a beautiful day and we have done a lot. We will continue to do the remaining work at this site this month.

待ちに待っていた清掃、草取り活動は午前中の雨で、翌日、6月13日の日曜日に変更しました。晴天の中で、随分仕事が片付きましたが、今月は、やり残したグレートリバー公園入り口沿いのサイトの草取りと花苗の植え付け作業引き続き行っていきます。

We had a beautiful cherry tree planting event at Univ. of St. Joseph not long ago.
Yes, it's a planting time but also a weeding time as everything grows along with the rise of temperature.

Attached is a June flyer and we hope many people will participate.
We have one more supporter who joined with me yesterday to clean up vines and twigs of Manchester Land Conservation Trust Parklet.   Jim volunteered to cut grass for us which had grown over 1 feet.
Also, the nice thing is that the manager of Hampton Inn & Suites on Pitkin Street says "Yes" as soon as she saw me walked in the hotel.  I went there to get a permission to park our cars at their customer parking lot on our cleaning day.

We planted 25 Yoshino Trees at University of St. Joseph             May 11, 2021            
Today’s weather reminded me of Makoto Shinkai’s anime movie ”Your Name” and we were as though  actors and actresses of  his film who were performing the ground breaking ceremony under the blue sky under his direction. The day rolled peacefully and placidly.

Today’s ground breaking event was simple and informal due to the current situation.
The long awaited “Tajima in Relief “ exhibition will finally open this fall after the several postponements due to Covid-19. UJSC plans to donate 10 additional Yoshino cherry trees in celebration of “Tajima in Relief “ Grand Opening.
Hopefully, Corona is soon eliminated and our very important guests/performers, Izumo ShowChow,  a Japanese classical dancer and Satoshi Kataoka’s group, tea ceremony masters from Japan can join with us to share the joy of the grand opening.

２５本の桜の木を聖ジョゼフ大学に植樹しました。     2021年5月11日
新海誠監督の「君の名は」を彷彿とさせる青空と雲、その下で鍬入れ式を演じている我々がいるような錯覚に陥ってしまう程、平和で穏やかな１日が流れて行きました。今日の鎌入れ式は現況故に、簡略化された行事でした。
今年秋には、アート　ミュージアムで、コロナ パンデミックの為に、延期を余儀なくされた『田嶋イン  レリーフ』がオープンし、それを記念して１０本の桜が追加植樹されます。
願わくは、コロナが収束し、日本からの貴賓客、日本舞踊家の出雲松蝶 、片岡聡茶道家御一行がこのグランド  オープニングに参加できますように！

Live in Harmony with Nature

Pollination Garden Project at Univ. of St. Joseph May 4, 2021

This project started last year in conjunction with Sakura Manbon Belt Way with the support from Miyoshi America, Inc., Maruichi Japanese Food and Deli’s patrons and employees and personal contribution from Mr. Setsuo Ohmori, Japanese Consul General in Boston and Hon. Gregory Boyko, Japanese Consul General covering New England.
This year we delivered about 40 native species of plants for pollinator garden project led by the biology students and Associate Prof. Kirsten Martin.
When I read a comment by Ms. Martin, I felt like exuberant energy was being reactivated on campus after the long sleeping mode due to Covid-19.

Here’s Ms. Martin’s comment;
“Thanks to the hard work of the students (who told me that digging holes, tearing out grass, and planting the flowers was a much appreciated end of semester stress reliever) and my fellow faculty colleagues who stopped by to help, the garden looks great. Many of the students who helped me with the pollinator garden returned later in the afternoon to help plant the new meditation garden.  It was really wonderful seeing campus again, it's hard to believe that it has been almost a year since the last time I set foot on campus.

聖ジョゼフ大学生物学部の花粉媒介植物園プロジェクト 2021年5月4日

このプロジェクトは、『桜万本』植樹活動と連動して、Miyoshi America, Inc. , Maruichi Japanese Food & Deli West Hartfordの顧客と従業員一同、並びにボストンの日本領事館大森摂生総領事とニューイングランド地方管轄のグレゴリー ボイコ総領事の支援を得て、スタートしましたプロジェクトです。

今年は、生物学部生徒とカーステン　マーチン准教授が推進している花粉媒介植物園プロジェクトに約４０種類の在来種の低木と草花の苗を届けました。

マーチン准教授のコメントを読んだ時、Covid-19の為、長い眠りに入っていた大学のキャンパスにあふれんばかりのエネルギーが息吹きはじめ、活気が蘇ったように感じました。

下記が、マーチン准教授のコメントです。

“穴を掘ったり、雑草をむしり取ったり、そして花を植えたりは、学期終わりのストレス解消には大変有難い作業だったとこの重労働を私にコメントした生徒達と、現場に立ち寄って手を貸してくれた同僚の教員連に感謝感謝！植物園が素晴らしく見えます。花粉媒介園作りで私を手伝ってくれた生徒達は、午後には再び戻ってきて、他のグループの新しいプロジェクトである瞑想ガーデン作りも手伝ってくれました。久しぶりにキャンパスが見れて大変嬉しかったです。キャンバスに足を踏み入れたのは殆ど一年ぶりだとは信じがたい事です。“
